Cottage Grove Retrospective
A look back at Sentinel stories from 30 and 60 years ago
At home...a long way from home: 1987
W
hen Americans think of Bra-
zil, the tropical weather, the
Amazon River and the sun-
splashed beaches of Rio come mind.
But what thoughts do Brazilians have
when America is mentioned?
"Washington D.C., New York, Los Ange-
les, maybe Dallas," said Joa Antonio Lopes,
a chemical engineer from Lorena, Brazil.
No, not Oregon," he said with a somewhat
stilted, yet understandable English. "I didn't
know what it was before I arrived. But it's
very beautiful though...I love nature."
Lopes, joined by fi ve of his countrymen,
toured Cottage Grove and its schools Mon-
day as part of a Rotary International group
study exchange program. Oregon District
511 is hosting the Brazilian visit following
a similar trip by district members to Brazil
earlier this spring.
Monday morning, the six-member con-
tingent divided into two groups and dropped
in at Bohemia and Harrison elementa-
ry schools to visit with some of Cottage
Grove's younger students. After an informal
luncheon at the South Lane School District
offi ces, the groups headed out to Lincoln
Junior and Cottage Grove high schools.
At Lincoln, students talked openly with
the group members about the two countries,
their differences and similarities, and prob-
lems facing teens in both nations-including
drug abuse.
Americo DeSouze Filho, an English
teacher and clinical psychologist, said that
while Brazil had its share of drug abuse and
alcoholism, "it's not as serious as you say it
is here."
He was interested particularly in why
teens turn to drugs, a subject many Lincoln
students seemed willing to talk about.
On other subjects, the visitors fi elded
questions about Brazilian cities, ethnic dif-
ferences and politics. When asked about his
impression of Oregon, Filho said the state
was "privileged."

"Oregon, in one state, you have every-
thing tied with nature. You have snow, you
have beaches, you have dunes. In my opin-
ion, Oregon is privileged," he said.
Other members of the group included
Jose Geraldo Querido, a hydraulic engineer;
Bolivar Zinsly, an opthamologist; Jairo Jose
Dos Santos Ayres, a chemical engineer; and
Persio Martins de Siqueria, a mechanical
engineer and exporter.
After a stop in Roseburg, the contin-
gent will continue on its six-week Oregon
journey by visiting Grants Pass, Medford,
Ashland, Klamath Falls and Lakeview. The
group will return to Brazil in early June.
But they will have left their mark on Cot-
tage Grove long after they leave the state
said Rotary member Al Monce.
"I've been involved in this for a number of
years," Monce said of the group exchange
program, "and it's always a very rewarding
experience."
• Lawmakers are considering
higher gas taxes and registration
fees to pay for statewide road
maintenance. It’s part of a plan to fi ght congestion in the
Portland area, as well as address the issue plaguing cities
across the state as they struggle to maintain roads without in-
creased funding. It comes as the legislature prepares to move
forward with an $8.2 million transportation package.

The winter storms that hit Oregon, causing power outages
and damage, have been denied federal emergency funds.
FEMA has declined to honor the request made by the state
for aid in fi nancing the clean-up efforts in a letter that stated,
“the damage from this event was not of such severity and
magnitude to be beyond the capabilities of the state.”

A complaint was fi led in U.S. District Court alleging that
inmates at four Oregon prisons were given food not meant
for human consumption. Oregon State Penitentiary, Coffee
Creek Correctional Facility, Two Rivers Correctional Insti-
tution and Columbia River Correction were named in the
suit. It notes that rotten food was reportedly served to in-
mates and that inmates allegedly suffered from nausea and
intestinal dishes after eating it.

Governor Kate Brown has entered the discussion on how
to avoid interruption of services to Oregon’s Medicaid pro-
gram in the wake of a possible repeal of the Affordable Care
Act (Obamacare) and a budget defi cit for the state. The Or-
egon Health Authority is facing an $882 million budget gap
that must be addressed before an estimated 350,000 Oregon
residents are no longer eligible for Medicaid.

couple of years. Transients have been staying in it the last couple

it with their bicycle the previous week.
