Happenings at Latham
Tuesday Clubs
Our April Afterschool Clubs were a hit this
month!! Classes include Chess, Rag Rugs, Gar-
den Club, Birdhouses, and a Preschool Storytime
with Mrs. McMichael, our Kindergarten teacher.
The preschool story time allowed future kinder-
garten students to get a taste for what they will
see and do in kindergarten next year. A BIG thank
you goes to all of our volunteers!
Lion’s Pride Pageant/Penny War Fundraiser
This is the third year that Latham students, com-
munity, and staff have participated in a Penny War
to raise money to give to the Lion’s Pride Pageant
which in turn donates it to the Children’s Mira-
cle Network. The Children’s Miracle Network
provides money for the Springfi eld Riverbend
Sacred Heart Hospital’s neonatal and pediatric
units. The students listened to a presentation in
which the high school participants in the pageant
explained what their “pennies” would be used for.
The staff and students look forward to the Penny
War each year; pennies are the positive points and
silver/currency take away from the penny totals.
Each year we have raised more money than the
previous year. This year Latham raised $604.59!
Awesome job!!!
Latham’s Garden
Many hands are coming together to get our gar-
den ready for some new plants. Kids can visit the
garden during their recesses and one of our Tues-
day Clubs had a gardening theme. We were also
fortunate to get a new fence this spring thanks to
a grant.
If you are interested in being a part of this gar-
den adventure, please give us a call at (541) 942-
0147.
We just purchased a nice greenhouse using our Farm to
School grant and are excited that we will be able to extend our
gardening time. 4th and 5th grade caught a break and were able
to go to Mt. Pisgah on the most beautiful day of the spring.
Dorena Panthers just fi nished this year’s Spirit Week and we haven’t added up the points, but
everyone had a great time. We dressed up in past decade clothes and as story book characters,
wore all the colors in the rainbow (plus a few) and of course wore our school colors to school.
We had our fi rst Dorena Art Show and Sale this month and we found out we had some real artist
among us. Artist Teri Robertson from the Lane County, Artist in Residence program, spent a week
with students teaching them how about lines, shapes and how they work together to form cartoons.
The art show was a great success and many students sold their art to staff and parents. Some of
the art will be framed and put in the cafeteria, the library, the front offi ce and the principal’s offi ce.

Update from Dorena
Lincoln Middle School has seen its referrals drop after instituting the Tiger Pride
room, a place where students can talk out their struggles. The school also made
changes to the daily schedule which allows students to choose a wider variety of
electives and gives teachers more time, effectively lowering failing grades.

TRENT WILLIAMS
ANNA LALONDE
On a day-to-day basis, Trent has
shown up to school with a great
attitude and a willingness to learn
new things. His knowledge and
abilities can be clearly seen in
addition to his incredible
work ethic. Trent does an
excellent job of participating
in class and volunteering to
help out around the room
without even being asked. As
his leadership qualities continue
to develop, I have no doubt
that he will be an excellent
citizen in the years to come
in the Yoncalla community.
