Pastor Cindy Slaymaker set to retire April 2

Pastor Cindy Slaymaker came to Cottage
Grove just before the turn of the century,
she was homeless. She came to preach at the
Church of the Nazarene and had intended to
stay with a family from the congregation until she and her husband
could settle down.
"The day we got here, my husband broke his ankle," she said.
"It required pins and surgery, so it was an adventure. That was our
beginning in Cottage Grove."
The Slaymakers may have began on a rocky road in Cottage
Grove but eventually, the couple purchased a house and Cindy got
to work.
She has preached for the last 18 years to the small, family-like
congregation at the Church of the Nazarene, continuing on through
the loss of her husband.
"He always said if he got cancer, it would be from Agent Or-
ange," she said. The Vietnam veteran was gone after six weeks.
Cindy, however, remains faithful in Cottage Grove.
"I want to enjoy the city," she said of her pending retirement.

She wants to go to concerts in the park and work in her garden. Her
days will be fi lled with bicycle rides and meeting friends for coffee.
All of which will be a change of pace for the pastor who routinely
works 50 hours a week.
And while she said she plans to enjoy her retirement, she hopes to
also join local volunteer efforts.
"I'm not ready for a rocking chair on the porch yet," she said.
What volunteer group she's ready to join is not quite clear yet. She
is well aware of the crowded fi eld here in Cottage Grove of groups
eager to improve and help the community but isn't set on which
group may be for her.
"I don't know what the Lord will call me to do. I have a lot of
invitations to do a lot of things but I don't know what to do yet,"
she said.
While she is looking forward to slower weeks, she said the people
have always made Cottage Grove for her and will continue to do so.
"My congregation is made up of the best people,
she said. "They are as compassionate and loving as any group I
have ever known."

WEEKLY FAITH-BASED YOUTH PROGRAMS
AWANA CLUB MEETINGS – Wednesdays 6:30 - 8:30 p.m.
AWANA is a weekly Christian education program for ages three
through high school. Hosted by the Cottage Grove Bible Church,
the group meets weekly during the school year. The cost includes
the purchase of handbooks and uniforms and dues are 75 cents per
week. Children enjoy memorizing Scripture verses, games, Bible
lessons and dressing up for special theme nights. More informa-

CAMPUS LIFE CLUB – Mondays & Tuesdays at 7 p.m.
This Lane County Youth for Christ non-denominational youth
outreach program meets during the school year. Campus Life’s
weekly club meetings blend food, music, games and a short Bi-
ble-based "talk" that ends with a prayer. High School students
meet on Mondays at 7 p.m. in the game room above Domino’s
Pizza (next to the post offi ce). Middle School students meet on
Tuesdays at 7 p.m. at Riverside Community Church, 1255 S. Riv-

MOTHERS OF PRE-SCHOOLERS [MOPS] – Mondays
from 6-8 p.m.
An outreach ministry designed to support mothers and help
them be the best moms they can be. MOPS is for mothers with

Local car enthusiast remembered with vigil in Bohemia Park

A somber group gathered Saturday evening to remember
25-year-old Andrew “Andy” Dempsey, who was crushed to death
the day before while working under a car in Creswell. A 2009 Cot-
tage Grove High School graduate, he was a popular local mechan-
ic and a member of two Eugene-based car clubs: South Lane Auto Meet and Low Life 541.
More than 100 members of the car clubs joined family, friends and former classmates for a
memorial service in Bohemia Park. The event began with a ride around Cottage Grove Lake, which
started from the parking lot fi lled with 70+ cars and trucks. Many drivers loudly revved and backfi red
the engine of their customized vehicle to salute their friend’s memory as they waited their turn to join
the procession.
Following the ride, a candlelight service at the park’s fountain brought people of all ages to-
gether to remember a young man “who loved Hondas and skateboarding.”
Among the mourners were Mary Cadwalader, the mother of his only child who tragically died
of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome at the age of three months, and his current girlfriend, Bree Townley.
Many of those attending wore red sweatshirts in memory of classmate Kyle Ledford who died in a fatal
shooting here in January 2016 .
Friend Ashley Johnson said the car club members are a very close group that meets on Fridays
at the EWEB parking lot in downtown Eugene. She noted, sadly, 12 of Dempsey’s Lincoln Middle
School classmates have now died.
“It’s been a hard year for all of us who were at Lincoln together. It’s super sad about Andy
because he survived cancer, then lost his baby girl, and now his own life,” she said.
