COTTAGE GROVE SENTINEL MARCH 22, 2017 3C
An update from SLSD
on what's happening
around the district
Bohemia
Bohemia Elementary celebrated Martin Luther King
Jr. Day with a school wide activity in collaboration with
the activities provided at each grade level. Each student,
preschool- 5th grade, created a cloud through illustra-
tion or words that answered the prompt, “What is your
dream to make the world a better place?” Each individ-
ual student’s cloud was then placed on our cloud wall.
The cloud wall covers the main hallway and includes many sentiments that seem too
wise to be coming from an elementary school student.
Cottage Grove High School
Cottage Grove High School celebrated Unity Week this month which encompassed
a number of activities aimed at bringing students and staff closer together. Check out
this video to see highlights from the week and the annual MLK Award being present-
ed to students and staff and for the fi rst time ever a community member. You don't
want to miss seeing their reactions to getting the award!
Dorena
Our fi rst Dorena Resource Hub was a great success. What is a resource hub you
ask? Each and every fi rst Wednesday of the month, information and representatives
from different health organizations, are coming together in the Dorena cafeteria so
that parents and community members can fi nd the resources they need and help to
access those resources. Organizations like Peace Health, OHP, South Lane Mental
Health, and the Upriver Food Bank are just a few of the resources we can connect you
to. In addition to that, each month an application assister will be here to help parents
enroll their children in OHP. In March we will be spotlighting our School Based Ther-
apist, Matthew Spilde and South Lane Children’s’ Dental Clinic. Stop by and check
us out next month, March 1, from 1p.m. to 4 p.m. or call the Dorena Offi ce to set up
an appointment that day.
Harrison
Last month Harrison Elementary held their annual Math and Science Night. Through
our Title 1 Program, teachers worked in teams to create ten different learning stations
that centered on math and/or science. About 150 people attended the event, and a
good time was had by all. The picture below is of 5th grade teachers and their catapult
station – mini marshmallows were fl ying!
Latham
Our Parent Club wanted to put together a bingo night that would be a family event
and raise funds. On January 27, Latham had its fi rst bingo night with almost 40 com-
munity members donating their time or prizes. Parent volunteers, high school volun-
teers, and staff also came together to make this a successful and fun event!

TAWNEY
ELLIS
Tawny has been exploring
diff erent
mediums
to
express her artistic talents.
While she has done very
well with the typical “art”
mediums such as paints,
chalks, pastels and such, she
has branched out to express
art with wood. Since the
art class is off ered in the
wood shop classroom,
this
has
provided
her with a wonderful
learning
opportunity.
