BY CAITLYN MAY
cmay@cgsentinel.com
Lincoln Middle School announced
that it had raised over $3,000 for its
Community Sharing, Africa Bridge
campaign.
"We are excited to announce that our fundraising totals are in for
Community Sharing/Africa Bridge: $3066.19 Asante Sana! Thank
you so much," the school said of the efforts.
Africa Bridge is a nonprofi t with an offi ce in Oregon that works
to better the lives of children in Tanzania, specifi cally those chil-
dren affected by HIV/AIDS.
"Our fi ve-year program helps villagers identify most vulnerable
children and develop care plans for them, establishes agricultural
co-ops to produce income for these children's families, and changes
the economy of the entire village," the organization's website reads.
In the last fi ve years, Africa Bridge has spent $26,000 on animal
and crop co-ops, $26,000 on education access, $11,000 on village
training and $10,000 on health care access.
Community Sharing is a local organization here in Cottage Grove
that works with low-income and homeless individuals to provide
basic needs. The group, which was established as a nonprofi t in
1982, offers meals, clothing and other essentials for those in need.
Community Sharing also assists individuals with the process for af-
fordable housing and teams with community organizations to give
out food boxes each month and during the holidays.
Funds raised by Lincoln Middle School will be divided equally
between Community Sharing and Africa Bridge.
Lincoln Middle School raised $3,000, half of which will go to help children with HIV/AIDS in Tanzania

Dental clinic expands to
accept pre-k students
Superintendant Krista Parent visits pre-k students at South Lane Dental Clinic
The South Lane Children’s Dental Clinic expanded its services this school year to children ages
0-5 and expectant mothers. Two “baby” dental clinics have been conducted so far this year with more
planned for later in the year. The clinics are open to any children ages 0-5 and expecting mothers re-
gardless of any insurance coverage.
South Lane School District P-20 Coordinator Jackie Lester said the idea for the program came from
working with Lane Community College’s Dental Program last year. “LCC did a baby dental clinic with
us last school year and we wanted to create an opportunity to do this more regularly” said Lester. Lester
worked with local dentists and sought funding for the baby dental clinics. She received a $7,800 grant
from the Garcia Foundation and local dentist Dr. Tammy McClung offered to help with the clinic and
donated her time as a way to help make the money last.
This program is unique from the LCC Baby Dental Program in that it goes beyond conducting just
screenings. “After LCC did the screenings we did not have anything set up for actual treatment. We
shouldn’t measure screenings without a treatment vehicle in place. This program creates an opportunity
for the kids and mothers we see to receive treatment,” said Lester.
A lot of work goes into the clinics with volunteers and staff helping to make the clinics fun and edu-
cational. In addition to the screenings, they provide dental care packages with toothbrushes, toothpaste,
fl oss and timers and educate children on good nutrition, and proper dental care.

Care Coordinator Courtney Long by email or at 541-942-3383.
