Lutherans celebrate signifi cant anniversaries this year
This is a year of celebration for Cottage Grove’s Lutherans. It is the 70th anniversary of the estab-
lishment of Trinity Lutheran Church in Cottage Grove. It’s also the 500th anniversary of the birth of
Protestantism, a religious movement of the 16th century that began as an attempt to reform the Roman
Catholic Church and resulted in the creation of Protestant Churches.
Pastor Jim Markus has quarterly observances planned this year to remember church founder, Martin
Luther. He was a German monk who ignited a religious and cultural wildfi re that swept across Europe,
by challenging the teaching and practices of the Roman Catholic Church.
In early 16th century Europe, some theologians and scholars questioned Catholic Church teachings.
On All Hallow’s Eve (Oct 31) in 1517, Luther posted on the Wittenberg Castle church door 95 Theses
to begin an academic discussion of what he believed were doctrinal and practical abuses of the Catholic
Church. The rest, they say, is history.
Last Sunday’s worship service, at the big brown church on the corner of Sixth and Quincy, Markus
offi ciated a commemoration of Luther’s death on Feb. 18, 1546. He has a great deal of respect for Mar-
tin Luther’s courage to challenge the biggest and most powerful church in his day.
One of Luther’s most signifi cant contributions to theological history was his insistence that the Bible,
not church offi cials or tradition, was the sole source of religious authority. After being identifi ed as a
heretic and excommunicated from the Roman Catholic Church in 1520, Luther translated the New
Testament from Greek to German (published in 1522) and the Old Testament from Hebrew (published
in 1534), and strongly advocated for the entire Bible to be made available to everyone.
A congregational potluck is planned for Sunday, March 19, to watch the 2003 movie, Luther, starring
Joseph Fiennes. The potluck begins at 6 p.m. and the movie starts at 7 p.m. The PG-13 fi lm depicts
how regional princes and the powerful church have a fi rm and merciless grip on 16th century Germany.
When he issues a shocking challenge to their authority, the people declare him their new leader – and
hero. Even when threatened with violent death, Luther refuses to back down and sparks a bloody rev-
olution that shakes an entire continent to its core.
The theme of this year’s annual mid-week Lenten worship services is “Standing at the Cross” and
focuses on portions of Luther’s sermons. From March 1 through April 12, the Wednesday evening
service begins at 7 p.m. with a soup supper starting at 6 p.m. Each week, participants contemplate the
ways they stand fi rm in their faith as Christ-followers.
In September, an Octoberfest is planned that includes Reformation-themed kids’ games such as “Pin
the Theses on the Door”. On Oct. 29 at 3 p.m., Trinity members will participate in a joint Reformation
service at Grace Lutheran in Eugene.
“The 500th Anniversary of the Reformation gives us a special opportunity to be renewed in the Good
News that we cannot merit or earn God’s grace and favor, but that our salvation, our life with God, is
100% the work of God in Christ our Savior,” Markus said.
After seven decades of serving the community, members past and present are invited to a church
family reunion on Sunday, June 11 at 3 p.m. for a celebration service followed by a banquet. To request
an invitation, or to help locate a former member, call the church offi ce at 541-942-2373.
