12B COTTAGE GROVE SENTINEL FEBRUARY 1, 2017
O UR N EIGHBORHOOD
HAPPY RETIREMENT HOWARD
Howard Schesser, Community Development Director for Cottage Grove celebrated his reitrement
with friends and family on Friday, Jan. 27. at the armory in Cottage Grove. He plans to move closer
to Washington to be with his grandchildren. Below city collegues weigh-in on Schesser’s retirement.
City Manager Richard Meyers: “Howard will be missed. He proved and I knew I could depend
on him to perform whatever was assigned or needed to be done. He has been responsible for our
Emergency Management, Planning, Zoning and Building inspection. All things that tie directly to
protecting or improving the safety of the Citizens of Cottage Grove. He was involved in a lot of
different projects and he could always be counted on to do them well. Howard has been responsible
for so many things that have made the community a better place to live. Many of those things we just
take for granted. I am really excited for him to be able to dedicate his time to his family and life away
from all the pressures of the job.”
CG Police Chief Scott Shepherd: “Here are some memories regarding working with Howard,
Howard was a volunteer fi reman with South Lane Rural Fire Department and would often be the
fi rst one on scene at emergency calls, because he monitored the scanner while at work ( probably all
the time). Howard coordinated the Emergency Response Training for the City and we worked closely
together on many projects and he would always be helpful and responsive to training issues or police
department projects. Howard assisted with oral board interviews for the police department on many
occasions. He would provide thoughtful insight to that process. Although we didn’t work every day
together, he was always willing to help and available to answer any questions I had.”
Howard’s wifeMary Ellen: “I’m just very proud of him. He put the city fi rst and was very depend-
able and he put in a lot of work and a lot of hours.
Schesser fought back tears in describing the crowd that turned out for his send-off on Friday night.
“It’s overwhelming.”
Howard Schesser is headed closer to Washington after retiring late last week.
