CAMPUS LIFE CLUB –
Mondays & Tuesdays at 7 p.m.
This Lane County Youth for
Christ
non-denominational
youth outreach program meets
during the school year. Cam-
Kevin Pruett was destined to become a
pastor from the day he was born in Wichita,
Kansas nearly 48 years ago. He grew up in
a family with parents who spent 40 years in
Christian ministry. In his junior year of high
school his family moved to Salem where
he graduated in 1987. Fiv e years earlier he
sensed God’s call to follow in his parents’
footsteps.
“I grew up in the church. When I was 13,
I felt God’s call into ministry at a summer
camp,” Pruett said. “I ran from the call for
several years until I fell in love with youth
ministry at my church in Salem.”
It was in the church high school youth
group he met Deana, his future bride-to-
be. The fi rst spark of love between them
occurred while sharing an Oreo Blizzard at
the Lincoln City Dairy Queen on a youth
outing and they soon became high school
sweethearts. After graduating they married
and his parents moved to Oklahoma.
“Whenever we visit Lincoln City we al-
ways point out the Dairy Queen to the kids
and tell them that’s where it all started. This
year Deana and I will celebrate our 30th
wedding anniversary.”
Family is very important to the Pruetts.
They have four sons and a daughter. The
family tradition of serving in ministry now
continues with the next generation. Their
28-year-old son Kenny and his wife Holly
live in Salem. They have two young chil-
dren, Cate and Charlie, and serve in leader-
ship roles in their church.
Daughter Natalie and son-in-law Jacob
are graduates of New Hope Christian Col-
lege and serve on the worship team at New
Hope Church in south Eugene. Son Kraig is
a junior at George Fox University. Anoth-
er son, Kaden, is a senior at Waldport High
School. They are currently home-schooling
their 8-year-old son, Kohen.
of that Old Testament book. Ezekiel saw
God with four different faces: a man, a lion,
an ox and an eagle. In an early revival mes-
sage, McPherson compared these four fac-
es to the four phases of the gospel of Jesus
Christ. It was a Gospel that faces squarely in
every direction thus the name, “Foursquare
Gospel.”
The four symbols most identifi ed with
Foursquare today are the cross, cup, dove
and crown which stand for Jesus the Sav-
ior, Jesus the Healer, Jesus the Baptizer with
the Holy Spirit, and Jesus the Soon-Coming
King, respectively.
Kevin and Deana’s newest position as
Lead Pastors at Cottage Grove Faith Center
began on December 18. Finding a house in
Cottage Grove was challenging. They have
commuted from Waldport each week until
recently fi nding a home here.
After completing the fi rst month of
their newest pastoral assignment, Pruett
says he’s impressed with the tremendous
amount of love and grace Faith Center
members have for one another and with
their passion to share the love of Christ
in this community. The church’s primary
goal this year is increasing discipleship
opportunities for men, women and youth to
grow in their relationship with Christ. The
current membership is about 200 so they
plan to return to two Sunday services later
this year.
“Our family has received such a warm
welcome here,” Pruett said. “I especially
love the community’s historic areas and
fi nd the people to be very friendly and
gracious. We look forward to all God has
planned for the Cottage Grove Faith Center
and for this newest chapter in our lives.”
Kevin and Deana enjoy working with
youth and love the 15 years they served as
youth pastors in Salem, Keizer, and as lead
pastors in Dayton, a rural community west
of Salem.
In 1993, after surrendering his will to
God’s call on his life, Pruett enrolled in the
two-year ministry leadership program at
Salem Bible College. After graduating in
1995, he spent three years as the youth pas-
tor at an Assembly of God church in Keizer.
The next stop on their ministry journey
was at the Dayton Assembly of God Church
as lead pastors from 1999-2005. From
there they spent six years as high school
youth pastors at the West Salem Foursquare
Church. In 2012, they accepted the lead pas-
tor position at the Foursquare Church in the
coastal community of Waldport before an-
swering the call to come to Cottage Grove.
In a bit of a geographical twist, former
pastor Isaac Hovet, who grew up in Cre-
swell, and his wife Donia resigned last year
to accept a position at a Salem Foursquare
church. Their successors are a pastoral cou-
ple that grew up in the Salem area.
Once he settles in to his new position,
Pruett plans to take online courses to com-
plete his Bachelor’s Degree in ministry
leadership at Northwest University.
“We have learned so much during our
time in ministry, Pruett said. “Our ministry
philosophy has always been to ‘Love God,
Love People’ – and that will never change.”
The Foursquare Church is a Pentecostal
denomination that began in Southern Cali-
fornia in 1923. Its founder, Aimee Semple
McPherson, was a Canadian-American
Pentecostal evangelist and media celebrity
in the 1920s and 1930s.
The name “Foursquare Gospel” comes
from McPherson’s explanation of the
Prophet Ezekiel’s vision in the fi rst chapter
