COTTAGE GROVE SENTINEL JANUARY 11, 2017
CHAMBER NEWSLETTER
Our Mission: Th e Cottage Grove Area Chamber of Commerce promotes economic vitality through advocacy and collaboration with its members and the larger community.
Director’s Note:
Ben Franklin is credited with once saying,
“When you fail to plan, you plan to fail.” Such
is a philosophy that we’ve been reminded of
in numerous ways over the last several weeks.
Recent weather events have forced the entire State
of Oregon come to grips with the ways in which
we’ve all failed to plan in one area or another. I
think a generator is now close to the top of my
own personal wish list. Weather issues aside,
the New Year is when most people are thinking
about what they want to accomplish in the next
12 months, oft en because they’re also thinking
about the things that they failed to accomplish
in the last 12 months. Th is is a good practice
because, to quote writer and philosopher George
Santayana, “Th ose who can’t remember the past
are condemned to repeat it.” If you’re a local
business owner or manager, we hope that you’ve
already spent some time to examine the successes
and failures that you encountered in 2016 and that
you’re using those experiences to start 2017 with a
strategic approach.
At the Chamber we’re trying to practice
what we preach so we’ve streamlined our Mission
Statement: “Th e Cottage Grove Area Chamber of
Commerce promotes economic vitality through
advocacy and collaboration with its members
and the larger community. “ We also re-wrote
our 5-Year Vision Statement: “Th e Cottage Grove
Area Chamber of Commerce promotes Cottage
Grove as a prosperous destination community.
Economic Vitality is at the heart of everything
we do. As a resource for businesses, we are the
conduit that provides advocacy, marketing,
education, and networking opportunities to over
300 member businesses.” Finally, we looked at the
goals we set for 2016 and had a long discussion
about why we failed to achieve some but easily
accomplished others.
If you have not yet made a plan to grow your
business in 2017 it’s not too late. Any business
owner with any skillset can take steps to improve
upon their current situation. First take inventory
of the things that went well and then take a realistic
look at the things that need improvement. Ask
yourself why each situation went one direction
or another and don’t waste any time blaming
outside forces for anything. Excuses will never
help you succeed in business. To succeed, you
must identify what you can control and what you
can’t control. Focus your energy where you can
make changes and don’t allow things that you
can’t control to stop you from working on the
things you can. Write your plans down so you
can review them, and be sure to actually review

Grand Re-Opening Celebration
Th e Bohemia Gold Mining Museum will be
hosting its grand re-opening Saturday, January
28 from 1:00 to 3:00 pm in its new location at 308
South 10th in Cottage Grove, Oregon.
Formerly located on Main Street in downtown
Cottage Grove, the museum has been closed for a
year while staff moved it to the newly renovated
Boots and Sandals Square Dance Barn.
Th e museum’s collection of photographs, art,
tools, rocks and other artifacts pays tribute to the
area’s gold mining history. Special visitors and
events such as gold panning will be available at
the opening event.
Also open for the event is the Cottage Grove
Historical Society and South Lane Ballet
Academy. All three organizations reside in the
two-story red building, which can easily be
spotted across from the popular Bohemia Park
on South 10th in Cottage Grove. It still sports the
historic “Boots and Sandals” sign complete with
square dancers. For more information contact
the museum offi ce at (541)942-5022.
