City mulls roads after Police impound lot robbed:
gas tax failure
Suspect steals truck, drives through fence
BY CAITLYN MAY
The Cottage Grove Sentinel
The city of Cottage Grove is in
for a long road when it comes
to road repair.
A ballot measure designed to
increase the current gas tax
from three cents to six cents
failed in November leaving few
options for a revenue source
to address the city’s damaged
roads.
“I guess we put up with dis-
repair on roads and prioritize
what streets get fi xed,” said
Ron Bradsby, the city’s engi-
neer.
The city’s roads are currently
rated on a scale ranging from
very poor to excellent. A 2014
study called for 9.18 miles
of roads that met the require-
ments of very poor or poor to
be addressed at a cost of $5.4
million. However, Bradsby
noted those fi gures were three
years old.
The idea of a ballot measure
fi rst came before the Cottage
Grove City Council in August
where the board agreed to give
the question to voters. At the
time, councilor Mike Fleck
noted the tax increase would
affect low-income residents
who did not own fuel-effi cient
vehicles.
It was also noted at the August
meeting that a bond could
provide additional options for
funding. However, after the
failure of the tax increase, any
bond measure would also have
to go before voters before it
could be implemented.
Cottage Grove was not the
only municipality to attempt a
raise in the gas tax during the
2016 election cycle. Springfi eld
managed to increase its tax to
six cents, beating out Eugene’s
fi ve-cent tax. The local tax is in
addition to a state gas tax of 30
cents per gallon and a federal
tax of 18.4 cents.
While Bradsby agreed a bond
would be an option for revenue
to address the city’s streets,
he noted, “It’s really up to the
voters.”
Cottage Grove police are
searching for a suspect after an
impounded car was stolen from
the city’s impound lot on De-
cember 27.
The vehicle in question, a
white Dodge Durango, was
originally reported stolen in
California and recovered by lo-
cal police on Christmas Eve.
“The suspect had something
in the vehicle that was obvi-
ously worth the risk,” Cottage
Grove Detective Shawn Brans-
tetter said.
The incident occurred at ap-
proximately 4:50 a.m. Accord-
ing to Branstetter, the suspect
was able to gain access to the lot
by cutting razor wire and climb-
ing over the fence.
“They were able to start the
vehicle and drive through the
fence. Not through the gate.
They drove through the fence,”
Branstetter said.

the street from the impound lot

sey and I still feel called as missionaries to our wonderful town. For
the last six-and-a-half years, we have grown in our conviction God
especially prepared us to serve this community. ..While fulfi lling
the obligations of the pastorate, we felt that our hands were tied to

A 2014 study showed just over nine miles of road
inside the city's limits that were labeled "poor" and
in need of repair.
she didn't hear enything the
night of the break-in but she
wasn't surprised by the crime.
"I've lived here for nine years
and we have been robbed six
times," she said.
Johnson said the fence was
in disrepair before the police
department performed partial
maintenance.
There are no cameras inside
the lot and the alarm system did
not operate properly during the
course of the break-in.
“Hopefully there’s a part two
to this story,” Branstetter said.
He went on to say he doubts the
vehicle is being driven around
town. “If we recover the vehicle
we can obtain evidence from in-
side but there’s a chance it’s just
been stripped at this point.”
For Johnson, the break-in
highlights an on-going issue in
her area. "It's pretty sad that this
keeps happening. We fi nally had
to get cameras. What's next? A
moat?
