IN MEMORIAM
James Edward
Cavanaugh
1931-2016
James Edward Cavanaugh,
85, of Cottage Grove passed
away Oct. 25, 2016 from can-
cer.
Jim was born June 7, 1931
in Cincin-
nati, Ohio
to
Louis
and Carrie
(Nesse) Ca-
vanaugh.
He grad-
uated from
Hoover
High School in Glendale, Ca-
lif. After high school, he served
briefl y in the Army as a Private
First Class. Jim began his career
at Gladden Products building
Mustang motorcycles; he then
moved on to Nethercut Indus-
tries building the Trail Blazer
motorcycle. From motorcycles
Jim moved on to the FRP in-
dustry (Fiberglass Reinforced
Plastics), manufacturing spray
equipment for this industry
and eventually starting his own
company, Poly-Craft Systems.
In 1993 Jim moved Poly-Craft
from Burbank, Calif. to Cottage
Grove. Jim held several patents
in mechanical engineering for
the fi berglass industry, before
retiring in 2000.
Jim married Barbara (Pug-
mire) on Nov. 22, 1952 in Bur-
bank, Calif. Together they had
four children, 11 grandchildren,
15 great-grandchildren, and
one great-great-grandson. They
were married 63 years.
Jim loved to make clocks,
restore antique cars, trucks and
Mustang motorcycles. Jim won
many awards for the restoration
of his red 1948 Ford Pickup. In
his spare time he would write
many articles for motorcycle
magazines and was a guest con-
tributor for Mustang Motorcy-
cle Club of America, where he
would troubleshoot a problem
or tell a story from the “good
ole days”. Many people sought
him out for advice or help,
his true passion was in helping
others. Jim taught his children
and grandchildren all about
cars, the importance of hard
work, integrity, and honesty. His
knack to fi x or make things will
be missed along with his sense
of humor.
Jim is survived by his wife
Barbara of Cottage Grove, a
daughter Kathryn of Bryan,
Ohio, a son David and wife San-
di of Santa Rosa, Calif., a son
Gary and wife Debbie of Ba-
kersfi eld, Calif., a daughter Car-
rie and husband Jon Campbell
of Cottage Grove, 11 grandchil-
dren, 15 great-grandchildren,
and one great-great-grandchild.
A memorial service will be
held at 11 a.m. on Friday, Nov.
25, 2016 at Smith-Lund-Mills
Funeral Chapel, 123 S 7th
Street, Cottage Grove.
Eileen Carter
McLearn
1925-2016
Eileen Carter McLearn, 91,
of Cottage Grove died Nov. 4,
2016 from Alzheimer’s.
She was
born March
16, 1925 in
Scotia, Ca-
lif. to Wil-
liam
and
Elizabeth
(Douglas)
Carter.
In 1942, she graduated from
Eureka
(California)
High
School.
On May 20, 1943, she and
Merlin L. McLearn were mar-
ried in San Francisco, Calif.
Eileen worked 36 years with
South Bay Elementary as sec-
retary/assistant to the principal/
superintendent.
She enjoyed reading, laugh-
ing, cooking, making pies, and
visiting with all of her children
and grandchildren as often as
possible.
Survivors include two daugh-
ters, Merleen McLearn-Mc-
Intyre (Michael) of Cottage
Grove and Elizabeth Dale
Xavier (Rich) of Los Gatos, Ca-
lif., two sons, Dennis Michael
McLearn (Pam) of Davis, Calif.
and William Carter McLearn
(Danne) of Cottage Grove, 10
grandchildren and 16 great-
grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by
her husband on June 4, 1994 and
by a grandson, Bill McLearn Jr.,
in 2013.
No service is planned. Ar-
rangements under the care of
Smith-Lund-Mills Funeral Cha-
pel, Cottage Grove.
Alma Dean Cole
1931-2016
Alma Dean Cole of Spring-
fi eld passed away Nov. 3, 2016
at the age of 85, after a long
fi ght with Parkinson’s disease.
Alma was born May 13, 1931 in
Shawnee,
Oklahoma
to Truman
and Ruby
(Brown)
Roberts.
She gradu-
ated from
Visalia
Union High School in Visalia,
CA in 1950. Alma married El-
der J.R. Cole on June 21, 1951
and they spent over 51 years

Goodwin, Ned
October 31, 2016
Samuel Ned Goodwin,
peacefully passed away on Octo-
ber 31st, 2016 in Sarasota where
he resided for over 50 years.
He was 85 years old. Ned was a
driven man with a passion for
anything on wheels including
antique cars. He wore many hats
including but not limited to fa-
ther, teacher, salesman, counsel-
or and friend. He proudly served
his country as a Staff Sargent in
the US Air Force’s Motor Vehicle
Squadron where he witnessed combat during the Korean War. He
owned and operated North Trail Automotive Service Station, and
worked at Tropical Cadillac in Bradenton before his retirement. He
and his love of automobiles will truly be missed.
Ned is survived by his loving wife of over 65 years, Leita Good-
win or Sweet Cookie; their children, Bob and (Cindy) Goodwin of Co-
lombia Falls, Montana, Steve and (Melanie) Goodwin, of Sarasota, and
Elizabeth Goodwin Harris and (David) of Kissimmee; four grandsons,
Jake, Brian, Willie, and Drew; two step grand daughters, Jeana Har-
ris and Sarah Keller; four step great grandchildren in Cottage Grove,
Oregon; Jade, Megan, Brad and Zoe; and host of other loved ones.
Services were held on Wednesday, November 9th, 2016 at Sara-
sota’s National Cemetery in Sarasota. A luncheon celebrating his life
will followed at Crosspointe Christian Church. In lieu of fl owers, Ned
said, “Clean your garage!” Donations can be made to Crosspointe
Christian Children’s Ministry at www.crosspoint.life.
Perry Lee Adams
Dahl
1938-2016
Perry Lee Adams Dahl,
78, of Drain, Ore. passed
away Oct. 11, 2016.
She was born Feb. 2,
1938 in Memphis, Tenn.
Perry has lived most of
her life in Oregon.
Pre-
ceding
her in
death
was her
h u s -
band
of 53
years.
She worked beside her hus-
band for over 40 years in
their wrecking yard. Perry
had been retired for several
years.
Survivors include a son,
Gordon Radebaugh of
Drain, Ore., two grand-
daughters, two grandsons,
and four great-grandchil-
dren.
Along with her husband,
she was preceded in death
by a son, Robert Rade-
baugh.
She was loved by many
family and friends who will
miss her very much.

grandchildren.

Sunday, Nov. 20 from 2-5 p.m.

life will be held Saturday, Nov.
26 at 11 a.m., with a potluck
lunch to follow at Bethel Mis-
sionary Baptist Church located

Pearl Orma Whitten of Cottage
Grove,
Oregon
passed
away
peacefully on October 15, 2016. Pearl
was born to Herman and Frances
(Fresquez) Templeton on May 1,
1928, in Hammond, Indiana.
She married Francis J. Whitten in
Coos Bay, Oregon, on May 15, 2000.
Pearl is survived by her husband and
7 children, from previous marriages.
She also has one sister and three
brothers, 10 grandchildren, 13 great grandchildren, fi ve great, great
grandchildren, and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. Pearl
was preceded in death by her parents, her sister, Rose Montoya
(CA) and her grandson, Gregory Gonzales (Denver, CO). She
worked as a Tax Examiner for the Internal Revenue Service, Los
Angeles, CA, and also for / retired from Toyota (CA), where she
worked in the Accounts Payable Division.
Pearl was well known at local businesses in Cottage Grove,
always having time for a special story or joke to brighten their day.
If you played your cards right, you would be greeted with a cake
or other special treat from her kitchen. She was extremely giving,
accepting, kind, and friendly with everyone. She especially loved
her dogs, and all animals, big and small.
The family wishes to express their gratitude for the
compassionate, professional, respectful and gentle care provided
to Pearl and her family by
Middlefi eld Oaks Assisted Living
(Cottage Grove, OR) and Cascade
Hospice (Eugene, OR). The family
also gives special thanks to the
East Cottage Grove Congregation
of Jehovah’s Witnesses for their
warm, loving support, and to
Pearl’s dear friend, Charlene Baird,
who has been most helpful to her
family, at this time of need.
There will be a Celebration of
Life for Pearl, to be held in Denver,
CO, at a later date.
