Hoover said he was ap- proached by coaches in Eugene and says the overall goal was to get young athletes from Oregon more exposure. Hoover said that the coaches selected the top fi ve players from the area. “There was no offi cial tryout; if more kids wanted to go then we would probably have to host a tryout, but not many can go,” he said. The team had its fi rst practice on Monday night and will be working throughout the week to prepare for the tournament. Upon arrival, each team will be placed into a bracket system and put up against teams deter- mined by an exclusive software program. The teams enter a double-elimination bracket with three teams. The tournament will also provide a special Thanksgiv- ing dinner for each team at the game fi elds. $ PUUBHF ( SPWF 4 FOUJOFM Our Community Newspaper since 1889 Subscribe and $AVE COMEBACK sparked when Blake Sentman threw a short eight-yard pass to senior Zane Levings, shrinking the defi cit to four points. The Lions were able to get the ball back but were forced to punt, which is when disaster struck. Cottage Grove’s punt was blocked, and Astoria recovered the ball at the Lions’ fi ve-yard line. Astoria’s Tyler Lyngstad ran the ball in from four yards out to once again make it a two- score game for the Lions. After the Fishermen touch- down, Sentman and his offense responded with a 25-yard touch- down pass to Kory Parent. A two point conversion made it a three-point game, 21-18. After the touchdown, Head Coach Gary Roberts said that he got the feeling Astoria’s team was beginning to get winded, and that his team still had a lot of fi ght left in them. The Lions were able to force Astoria to punt, but Cottage Grove was stopped once again on fourth down. But it still wasn’t over. The Fishermen lost 14 yards on two plays and then received a personal foul due to a player re- moving his helmet before reach- ing the sideline. This forced As- toria to punt, and the Lions got the ball back at their own 35 with 2:45 left in the game. Hayden Glenn caught a nine- yard pass from Sentman and began an offensive roll. Lev- ings later managed an 18-yard run to the Fishermen 37. Cot- tage Grove stalled for a bit and was put in a tough fourth-down situation. Sentman hit Jacob Woods, who dragged his feet for a fi rst-down reception. The very next play, Sentman threw it back to Woods on a short pass toward the sideline, but then he spun away from a tackle and dodged one more to run cleanly into the endzone, giving the Li- ons a four-point lead, their fi rst of the night. But it was going to be up to the Cottage Grove defense to close the game, as Astoria was getting the ball back with 1:16 remaining and two timeouts. Fishermen quarterback Fridt- jof Fremstad converted twice on fourth-down plays and complet- ed a 14-yard pass to put the ball at the Lions’ 16-yard line with one second left. Fremstad dodged two Lion defenders and had what seemed like an open fi eld, but the senior quarterback’s helmet came off, and by rule, the play was called dead and the game was over. Despite the lucky play, this game proved that Cottage Grove can overcome high-pressure sit- uations and make clutch plays when it really counts. The vic- tory sends the team to a semifi - nal match against Cascade. The game takes place at Hillsboro Stadium on Nov. 19 at 5:30 p.m. BRENT This Week Stats: 8-5 Season Stats: 82-48 BEAT THE PICKERS PANEL FOOTBALL CONTEST YOU CAN PLAY AND WIN!
