Food preservation
workshops
A hands-on class in the art of
preserving food will be taught
by Oregon State University Ex-
tension Service Master Food
Preservers on Saturday, Nov.
19. Entitled “All About Apples
and Holiday Food Gifts,” the
class offers demonstrations as
well as the chance for several
samples.
The class costs $10-14 on a
sliding scale, and those inter-

Annual turkey
shoot
Creswell Clay Target Sports
will host its annual turkey shoot
on Saturday, Nov. 12, which
features shots at clay targets for
cash prizes. The public is invit-
ed, and everyone is guaranteed
to win a turkey. Cost is $35 for
four games.
Eye and ear protection is re-
quired, and no shot size larger
than 7.5 is allowed. Questions

‘A Christmas
Story’ tickets

‘Peter and the
Starcatcher’
auditions
Cottage Theatre will hold au-
ditions for the fi rst production in
its 2017 season, ‘Peter and the
Starcatcher,’ on Sunday, Nov.
20 at 6 p.m. No appointment is
necessary. Roles are available
for approximately 16 actors,
both male and female, ages late
teens through sixties. Tony Rust
directs this production, which
will be on stage for three week-
ends, Feb. 3-19, 2017.
A wildly theatrical adaptation
of Dave Barry and Ridley Pear-
son’s best-selling novels, ‘Peter

and the Starcatcher’ provides
a fantastical backstory for the
century-old character of Peter
Pan. Interested actors are asked
to come prepared to sing a pirate
or drinking song in either a Brit-
ish or pirate accent, and to de-
liver a short Shakespeare verse.
The audition will also include
group improvisation exercises
and readings from the script.
First-timers are very welcome;
no previous stage experience is
necessary to audition.

Shakespeare
Festival school
visits
The School Visit Team of
William Elsman and Amy Liz-
ardo with the Oregon Shake-
speare Festival will be in Cot-
tage Grove on Monday, Nov. 14
at Cottage Grove High School.
This autumn marks the 45th
anniversary tour of the Oregon
Shakespeare Festival’s School
Visit Program (SVP), which
sends OSF actors directly to
schools throughout the Western
United States. Over 100 schools
will host actors this fall.
In October, November and
December, teams of actors will
tour schools throughout Ore-
gon, Washington, California and
Kansas, engaging students from
diverse backgrounds through
live performances and active
workshops.

to establish the Welcome Baby
Box as the cornerstone of the
child abuse prevention effort in
South Lane County. Beginning
in 2017, every infant in Cottage
Grove, Creswell and surround-
ing regions will receive a "Smit-
ten," Pip & Grow's signature
infant sleep space, stocked with
essentials for babies and par-
ents. Throughout the month of
November, Pip & Grow is cel-
ebrating the launch of the WBB
effort with a special buy-one-
get-one deal. One Smitten costs
$100, and it comes with one to
donate to 90by30, a savings of
$40.
By Jan. 1, 2017, 90by30 hopes
to have 100 completed Welcome
Baby Boxes ready to distribute.
Donations from individuals and
groups will be used to fi ll the
boxes, as well as contributions
such as knitting baby booties to
contributing money toward the
purchase of the diapers, medical
kits, clothes, books and other
items.
90by30 is a campus-commu-
nity partnership with the Uni-
versity of Oregon with the goal
of reducing child abuse and ne-
glect in Lane County 90 percent
by 2030. The Welcome Baby
Box, which aims to not only
provide a safe place for the in-
fant to sleep but furnish parents
with the supplies and knowl-
edge needed to get their child's
life off on the right foot, is the
fi rst prevention strategy selected
by a Lane County region.
