Kennedy students trick-or-treat in reverse

all is a special time bring-
ing the vibrant colors of
the turning season, leaves fall-
ing, pumpkins and children
anxiously awaiting the festive
Halloween activities. As the lo-
cal children were planning their
favorite costumes in preparation
of an evening full of Trick or
Treat fun, a group of Al Ken-
nedy High School students pre-
pared for a “Reverse Trick or
Treat” event.
The idea of “Reverse Trick or
Treat” was the idea of Brooke
Ormsbee.
Brooke gradu-
ated from Cottage Grove High
School in 2015 and then entered
the WIOA program (Workforce
Innovation Opportunity Act),
which provides worksite and
career training. She wanted a
way for high school students
to give back to the community.
She wanted a way to provide
some Halloween fun for those
who were not able to go out
and enjoy the Trick or Treating
experience. She came up with
the thought to go to the pediat-
ric ward in a hospital and bring
Halloween to the children who,
due to illness, would be missing
out. This was where “Reverse
Trick or Treat” was born.
Working with the staff at Al
Kennedy High School, a trip
was planned to visit RiverBend
Hospital’s Pediatric Unit. Local
businesses were contacted and
they generously donated candy,
books, and Halloween trinkets.
The Al Kennedy students who
participated in “Reverse Trick
or Treat” dressed up in costumes
and went to visit the pediatric
unit individual patient rooms
where they gave out candy.
One student stated, “When
we went to visit the hospital it
made my heart happy to know
we had the opportunity to give
to people that didn’t have the
chance to trick or treat. We made
some of these patients’ day and
it brought me pure joy to see
smiles on their faces.” Anoth-
er student said, “It was a very

memorable fi eld trip to Riv-
erbend. It was special visiting
the patients and handing them a
bag of candy. Who would have
thought that a little bag of candy
would make them happy? What
really caught my eye was how
sweet the nurses were and how
they talked to their patients and
interacted with them. You could
really tell that they cared about
each and every one of their pa-
tients. My favorite part of the
trip was seeing the smiles and
surprised looks from every pa-
tient and you could tell they re-
ally appreciated it.”
After walking through the pe-
diatric rooms, the students also
got to see the Neonatal Intensive
Care Unit (NICU) where they
were able to learn how babies
born premature are cared for.
While there, the students also
learned about the various health-
care roles that create the health
care team. Learning about the
various careers sparked some
interest in the students.
Before heading back to Al
Kennedy High School, the stu-
dents also paid a visit to London
School Elementary School and
visited a Kindergarten class.
The high school students helped
the children plant garlic. One
student refl ects, “I got to bond
with this one little girl. She was
the sweetest little thing. We all
helped to plant garlic cloves and
it was cool because that was my
fi rst time planting garlic. You
learn something new every day
and it puts a smile on my face
after all we did today. I had a re-
ally good time.”
