he South Lane School District Board of
Directors is asking for community input
for the naming of the new elementary school
that will be built to replace Harrison Elementary
School.
The community can go to www.slane.k12.or.us
to fi ll out an online form that allows participants
to propose a name for the school and to provide

comment. Community members can also mail a
name idea to the South Lane School District Ser-
vice Center at 455 Adams Ave. Cottage Grove,
OR, 97424
All submissions must be received by Tuesday,
Nov. 22.
In December, the School Board will use the
information to narrow down a list of 3-5 poten-
tial names for the new elementary school. Those
names will then be shared with the public so they
can provide additional input. The fi nal name of
the elementary school will be announced in Janu-

three and four-year old stu-
dents. Most of the students
attended and were excited
to see and play with all the
new toys and materials.
Preschool began Monday,
Sept. 19, and students will
be learning from 9 a.m.-
2:30 p.m.

monthly assemblies,
including the fi rst awards
assembly on Monday, Oct.
3 at 8:30 a.m. Mr. Sadiq’s
classroom will be making a
beautiful musical presenta-
tion.

Latham School
News
S
taff at Latham School welcomed back their
Latham Eagles with the red carpet treatment
this year. Students entered a freshly painted
hallway to meet their new teachers. Cayden
Burchfi eld was one of the fi rst ones to return!
The school’s garden fl ourished over the summer
(thanks to garden coordinator Tara Eckstine),
and students have been harvesting a little each
day.
The school has been looking forward to this
week, the week of Sept. 26-30, when they we
will be celebrating Spirit Week to coincide
with Homecoming Week at Cottage Grove
High School. Here is how the fun looks each
day: Monday is Crazy Sock Day, Tuesday is
Backwards Day, Wednesday is Crazy Hair Day,
Thursday is Sports Team Day and Friday is
School Spirit Day (blue and white or Latham
shirt).
Also, Latham starts its annual cookie dough
fundraiser this month! Those who don’t know
a Latham Eagle are asked to take a moment to
check out the selection of cookie dough and
other treats they are selling.
Tuesday Clubs start next month. Kids and
adults have lots of fun three afternoons a month!
Those interested in offering a workshop that
incorporates movement, hobbies, crafts or aca-
demic skill are asked to call 541-942-0147.

changed
The Wednesday, Oct. 12 PSAT
Testing Day has been moved to
Wednesday, Oct. 19.
Outdoor enthusiasts! Don’t for-
get to be a part of the Outdoor
Club’s fi rst hike by attending
this Friday’s meeting at lunch,
room 208. We’ll be getting per-
mission forms and sorting out
transportation arrangements.
Pride session for fall will
begin on Monday, Oct. 3 and
go through Monday, Nov. 21.
Those who need to make up
credit for Language Arts or So-
cial Studies are advised to see
their counselor this week.
Juniors and seniors: Those
who do not want their contact
information shared with the
military or university recruiters
are asked to pick up a form to
sign in the Main Offi ce, a form
that MUST be turned into Mrs.
Thoms by Friday, Sept. 30 to
assure their information is not
shared.
Want to be part of the Youth
Advisory Council? The City
of Cottage Grove provides this
opportunity for the youth of the
community to participate and
voice their concerns regarding
local issues and challenges.
The YAC meets on the fi rst
and third Monday every month
from 6:15-7:30 p.m. Applica-
tions are available in the offi ce
and can be turned in at City
Hall or at the YAC meeting on
Monday, Oct. 3 at City Hall.
The beginning of October
means that Book Club begins!
Those who are interested in
joining are asked to come to the
library and sign up. The club
meets every other Thursday
during lunch, and snacks are
always provided.

Battle of the Books are asked to
come to the Book Club meeting
on Oct. 6 at lunch in the library.
