made commissioner of the park
– essentially, he was “kicked
upstairs,” promoted to a presti-
gious but powerless position to
get him out of the way. As com-
missioner, he was essentially
the park’s presiding magistrate

On Saturday, about 40 volunteers helped plant over 100 native trees and shrubs in Pine Meadows Campground
and Lakeside Park at Cottage Grove Lake. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers organized this event to celebrate
National Public Lands Day. Most of the volunteers came from local community groups including Cub Scout
Pack 140, Boy Scout Troop 140, Girl Scout Troop 20007, Coast Fork Willamette Watershed Council and Al Ken-
nedy Alternative High School. In the inset photo above, Cub Scouts Bryce Johnson (left) and Ben Evans (right)
planted a native pine tree to provide habitat and shade in Pine Meadows Campground.
