Cross Country travels to Seaside, hosts fi nal home meet on Thursday
Lions compete in various courses based on diffi culty
The Cross Country Team of
Cottage Grove High made their
annual trek to Seaside last Friday
and Saturday to join thousands
of other high school running en-
thusiasts in the unconventional
“Three Course Challenge”.
There was way more drama in
determining which course each
athlete would run than there was
during any race day so far this
season. Each group of seven
teammates drew colored chips to
determine their race. Then they
each ran in the one of the three
races determined by the color of
the chip they drew for their con-
tribution to a combined single
team score. Those that drew a
white chip out of an empty cof-
fee can ran the easy course; blue
chip pickers ran the moderate
course, and those lucky enough
to draw the red chip were re-
warded with the chance to run
the diffi cult course.
Thirty-three Lions have
tales to tell after their adven-
tures through their course of
the meadows, mud pits, dunes
and trails at Camp Rilea. Head
Coach Jim Settelmeyer says ef-
fort from each athlete was never
in question, and their running
showed much overall improve-
ment in fi tness, specifi cally with
how they were able to attack the
mostly unknown courses. The
team led this outing by three
divisional top 10 fi nishers: Jes-
se Ellingworth (second, easy),
Paesen Timm (second, moder-
ate) and Sabrina James (eighth,
diffi cult).
This Thursday (Sept. 22) the
Lions invite all their fans to
come out to Schwarz Park, just
below Dorena Reservoir to root
them on as they host their fi nal
home meet of the year. Twenty
high schools are coming to join
them. Friends, family and com-
munity members that come and
join are invited to hop into the
JV (and Open) run to experi-
ence the challenge this meet is
famous for. Harrier’s Challenge
is celebrating its 15th annual
partnership with the Corps of
Engineers and an army of local
volunteers to create a fun event.
Over 300 runners are expected
to participate this year.
FOOTBALL
Cycle the Lakes another success
CONTINUED FROM PG 1B
Saturday saw the sixth
annual Cycle the Lakes
bike ride. The ride is put
on by the Rotary Club of
Cottage Grove and funds
are raised to support local
and internation projects in
health, education, literacy
and youth development. A
total of 237 riders showed
up with 93 volunteers
helping with the event.
Oregon, California, Nevada
and Colorado were all rep-
resented among the riders.
There were fi ve different
routes to choose from:
32, 42, 67, 77 and 102-mile
routes.
touchdown and two-point con-
version almost rattled Cottage
Grove. The Indians were able to
score due to a fairly controversial
pass-interference call on Parent.
As time was winding down, Cot-
tage Grove made a fi nal drive to
get inside the 20-yard line. Cottage
Grove sent out Giffen and the fi eld
goal unit to try to put the game
away. Parent, who holds the ball for
Giffen, made an incredibly athletic
play when the snap fl ew nearly a
foot behind his back but still man-
aged to control the ball and place it
in time for Giffen to kick the ball
through the uprights.
“It was a combination of Kory’s
hold and the fact that Erick’s a one-
step kicker,” Roberts said.
Roberts says that this win shows
that the Lions are capable of re-
sponding to adversity.
“We don’t have a lot of bodies,
so these kids are playing a full four
quarters of football,” he added.
The win didn’t do much for the
Lions in terms of OSAA rank-
ings. Cottage Grove currently sits
at 16th, fi ve spots behind Elmira
(also 3-0). The Falcons haven’t yet
gotten a quality win like Cottage
Grove’s nail-biter against a strong
Scappoose program, but they will
get their chance against Junction
City this week.
Meanwhile, the Lions are prepar-
ing for their own Sky-Em opener at
Sweet Home this Friday. The Hus-
kies are 1-2 with their most recent
loss this past Friday in Stayton.
