GOSPEL
SING-A-LONG – Friday,

Hosted at the Old Time Gos-
pel Fellowship Church, 103 S.
5th St. The monthly event fea-
tures group singing and music
specials. If you have an instru-
ment to play or you want to sing

F
our days remained for Cottage
Grove Christian School teacher
Dianna Mohr to get everything orga-
nized and tidied up before the Aug. 23
Open House, which included an offi cial
ribbon cutting ceremony with the may-
or. The rows of desks were neatly lined
up. Colorful instructional wall decora-
tions were in place and ready for her
young students to learn the basics. Her
husband of many years was on-duty to
help her unpack the stacked boxes of
books and teaching supplies that ringed
the room awaiting a home in her newest
classroom in the Cottage Grove Sev-
enth-Day Adventist Church.
History repeats itself this month
when students walk into Mrs. Mohr’s
classroom next Monday. According to
the local history book, Golden Was the
Past, Vol. 1, 129 years ago, in 1887,
children of a group of pioneers from
Minnesota (and a few other students
from communities in Washington, Ida-
ho and other parts of Oregon) walked
into the small classroom of Cottage
Grove’s fi rst Adventist teacher. That
humble one-room school in Silk Creek,
an area just west of town, evolved into
the Royal Academy that educated local
and international students here from
1905 to 1950.
The article author Edith Darnell
wrote, “Education is with the Seventh-
Day Adventists a form of religion. They
have always believed in furnishing their
children, and others if they wish to at-
tend, with schools where fundamental
Bible religion is the basis and the crown
of learning.”
Pastor Kevin Miller and his wife Car-
rie’s son, Wyatt, thrived in the Oak Park
and Trinity preschools. As they won-
dered what’s next for him they began
talking with church members and some
parents of Wyatt’s classmates.
“In the fall of 2014, we felt it was
time to bring back an Adventist school
here,” Miller said. “As we began ex-

ploring the idea with our members and
education leaders within in the Oregon
Adventist Conference, we knew it was
a really big venture. We determined to
take the journey together and allow God
to make it clear what we were to do.”
Currently there are 11 students en-
rolled in grades 1-4. The school has a
capacity for 18 in the blended class-
room that uses a nationally recognized
accredited curriculum and provides in-
dividual instruction that allows students
to progress at their own rate of learn-
ing.
School hours are 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. on
Monday through Thursday with a half
day on Friday from 8 a.m. to noon.
Home-schooled students are invited to
attend on Wednesday mornings for a
Chapel worship assembly, hear guest
speakers, play Bible games and partici-
pate in art, Spanish, choir and drama
activities.
Miller said, “We are blessed to have
such a successful and experienced
teacher helping us re-establish a faith-
based school here. Dianna has a pas-
sion for teaching kids and a strong track
record of starting new schools.”
Mohr began teaching in California
after graduating with an elementary ed-
ucation degree from La Sierra Univer-
sity in 1966. In her decades-long career
as an educator, she has taught classes in
grades K-12 in six states and became
the fi rst female principal in the Oregon
SDA Region, while working in Glad-
stone. She stays connected to hundreds
of her former students on Facebook.
“My favorite grade is the one I’m
teaching,” Mohr said. “I love being with
kids and helping them learn. I have the
joy and privilege of witnessing all their
“aha” moments. I especially love teach-
ing in Christian schools because Christ
is integrated throughout the curriculum
and I want my students to have a per-
sonal relationship with Jesus. It’s fun to
start a new school and watch how stu-
dents grow from one school year to the
next.”
The curriculum teaches basic edu-
cation fundamentals and incorporates
four anchor points of understanding: 1)
God as Creator, 2) The reality of sin, 3)
What Jesus did for all on The Cross, and
4) Jesus Christ is coming back again.
As part of the world’s largest Prot-
estant school system, Cottage Grove
Christian School’s mission is “To con-
nect young people to Jesus Christ and
to prepare them for a life of service to
God and humanity.” The school’s vision
is to provide high-quality, Bible-based
Christian education as an alternative
to secular education in the community.
Their philosophy is students will excel
as scholars, community leaders and ser-
vants of Christ if they have an affi rming
environment supported by a committed
community and staff providing an edu-
cational experience that pursues whole
child development.
Aleah Orton will be a fi rst grader at
the school this year. She completed kin-
dergarten at a Springfi eld elementary
school last year. Her Christ-centered
family attends The Grove Community
Church (on Mosby Creek Road). The
Assistant Pastor, Bradly Shepherd, is a
long-time family friend who helps care
for Aleah when her mother and grand-
mother are at work.
“We discussed the opportunity and
decided to enroll her after a conversa-
tion I had with her on the way to school
last spring,” Shepherd recalled. “I asked
her why she wanted to go to a Christian
school. When her response was ‘Jesus
isn’t in my school,’ that’s when we
knew we had to do this for her.”
Miller noted the tuition is affordable
and fi nancial aid is available. Non-Ad-
ventist families that desire to be part of
a Christian community, that can satisfy
fi nancial arrangements and can accept
the school policies are invited to enroll
their children in Mrs. Mohr’s class.
“We have a renewed sense of excite-
ment in offering a meaningful, impact-
ful ministry to our community’s fami-
lies,” Miller said.
