COTTAGE GROVE SENTINEL Aug. 17, 2016
SPEEDWAY
CONTINUED FROM PG 1B
The IMCA Modifi ed main
event was full of cautions. A
total of eight stoppages oc-
curred which resulted in several
restarts. Cottage Grove’s Tyler
Smith showed the way early be-
fore getting passed on the fi fth
lap by Steven Sturdevant. Stur-
devant, out of Springfi eld, pos-
sessed the top place position for
a handful of laps. Collen Wine-
barger would get around him
shortly after a lap-six restart.
The Corbett native, Winebarger,
led the remainder of the distance
to win his fourth feature of the
season at CGS.
Tyler Smith was able to win
the battle for second at the line,
with fellow Cottage Grove driv-
er Kinzer Cox behind him. The
rest of the top fi ve consisted of
Steven Sturdevant in fourth and
Curtis Towns of Cottage Grove.
In the Late Models, it was all
about Preston Luckman. The
young man from Coos Bay eas-
ily seized the initiative right
from the get-go. Luckman held

his lead from start to fi nish to
win his fi rst Late Model event at
Cottage Grove in only a couple
of start in his father’s car. Luck-
man performed a clean sweep of
the evening’s events.
Redmond’s Ron Brewster
placed second, while Rob Cam-
pos, from Scio, got third. Brit-
ton Donahoo, out of Salem,
fi nished in fourth, followed by
Nathan Augustine, also from
Redmond.
Jorddon Braaten once again
was the man to beat in the IMCA
Sport Mods. In the main event,
Springfi eld’s Tharen Trissell led
the fi rst lap before getting passed
on lap two by Randy Dunlap.
Dunlap, from Cottage Grove
and driving for Jimmy Owen,
kept the position for quite some
time before losing it on lap 14.
The driver to make the pass was
Central Point’s Braaten. Braat-
en dominated the rest of the
way to win his seventh feature
at CGS this year.
Andrew Mathers, of Eugene,
fi nished an impressive second,
while Yreka, California’s Jimmy
Lipke was third. Winston driver
Buddy McHargue crossed the
wire in fourth and Mike Medel,
of Medford, got fi fth.
Last but not least were the
Quality RV Hornets. Westfi r’s
Josh Corley got to front on the
opening lap. Corley checked
out from the rest of the fi eld to
make his sixth appearance in
victory lane this year. It was
also Corley’s second consecu-
tive victory in the Hornets as
well as a clean sweep.
Chris Pierce, of Cottage
Grove, was second while Vene-
ta’s Brad Moffett fi nished third.
K.C. Scott, from Springfi eld,
ended the night in fourth while
Harrisburg chauffeur James
McClure was fi fth.
Cottage Grove Speedway will
be off next weekend due to the
Western Oregon Exposition.
The track returns to action on
Friday, Aug. 26, and Saturday
the Aug. 27. For more infor-
