VOLLEYBALL
Digging Brazil as
home-court favorite
Volleyball is divided into two disciplines: indoor and beach.
Indoors, world No. 1 Brazil is primed to capitalize on its
home-court advantage. The Murilo Endres-led squad has
been jumping out of the gym to avenge its stunning 2012
Olympic loss in the final to Russia, which won in five sets
after losing the first two. The Russians will contend again,
along with Team USA – the 2015 World Cup champions –
and Poland. For the women, the top-ranked U.S. squad, led
by Alisha Glass, is poised to win its first-ever Olympic gold.
The beach tournament features three-time gold medalist Kerri
Walsh Jennings – with new partner April Ross – vying for
another championship. On the men’s side, contenders include
Team USA’s Phil Dalhausser and Nick Lucena and the
Brazilian duo of Alison Cerutti and Bruno Schmidt.
