112-YEAR
EXILE
Lydia Ko
In golf’s return to the Games for the first time
since 1904, 60 men and 60 women compete in a
72-hole stroke play format at a newly constructed
course designed by American architect Gil Hanse.
Official World Golf Rankings determine each coun-
try’s lineup, with a maximum of four players allowed
from a given nation. As of this writing, golf’s cele-
bration on the world stage will be led by the U.S.
threesome of Dustin Johnson, Jordan Spieth and
Bubba Watson on the men’s side, while Americans
Lexi Thompson and Stacy Lewis, Canadian Brooke
Henderson, and top-ranked Lydia Ko from New
Zealand highlight the women.

HANDBALL
GYMNASTICS:
FLYING HIGH
Gabby Douglas
Gymnastics is divided into three disciplines:
artistic, rhythmic and trampoline.
Within artistic, there are 10 events: individual,
team, floor exercise, pommel horse, rings, vault;
horizontal, uneven and parallel bars, and bal-
ance beam. A total of 14 gold medals are
awarded to men’s and women’s gymnasts.
In rhythmic, there are women’s individual and
group disciplines with two golds awarded. And
in the trampoline, there are the men’s and wom-
en’s events with a gold medal awarded in each
gender.
Team USA, led by Gabby Douglas and Aly
Raisman, should vie for gold in the women’s
team event, while in the women’s all-around, ris-
ing American Simone Biles and Romania’s
Larisa Iordache should bag hardware.
In rhythmic, look for Ukraine’s Anna
Rizatdinova, Belarus’ Melitina Staniouta and
Russians Yana Kudryavtseva and Margarita
Mamun to vie for podium space.
In trampoline, historically China and the
United States have been dominant.

INDOOR EXCITEMENT AND
GOALS GALORE AT RIO’S
FUTURE ARENA
Handball offers 60 minutes of fast-paced action and plenty of
goals, as two teams of seven pass the ball among teammates
across a 40-by-20 meter indoor court and attempt to throw it into
the opposition’s goal. Players may only hold the ball for only up to
three seconds before dribbling, passing or shooting and only the
goalkeeper is allowed to touch the ball with their feet. Defending
men’s champion France should expect to be challenged by
Croatia and Russia, while Norway looks for its third-consecutive
gold medal on the women’s side.
