CAN HOPES
Cycling consists of track, road, BMX and moun-
tain bike disciplines. All told, 18 gold medals are
handed out, divided evenly between men and
women. Two-time London silver medalist Sarah
Hammer leads a young U.S. women’s track team,
while a top Great Britain squad includes defend-
ing Olympic champions Laura Trott and Bradley
Wiggins. Road contenders include 2012 bronze
winners Chris Froome (U.K.) and Alexander
Kristoff (Norway) and gold medalist Marianne Vos
(Netherlands). In BMX watch for defending
champs Maris Strombergs (Latvia) and Mariana
Pajon (Colombia), and mountain biking features
the anticipated returns of 2012 winner Jaroslav
Kulhavy (Czech Republic) and bronze medalist
Georgia Gould (U.S.).

Diving competitions are held at two
heights, a 3-meter springboard and a
10-meter platform, with athletes competing
individually and in pairs (aka synchro-
nized). A total of eight gold medals are
awarded to male and female divers.
Once again, China figures to be a major
force here, with serious gold medal con-
tenders in the women’s springboard (He
Zi) and men’s and women’s platform (Qiu
Bo, Chen Ruolin). In synchronized events,
Ilya Zakharov/Evgeny Kuznetsov of Russia
figure to vie for gold with Great Britain’s
Jack Laugher/Chris Mears in the spring-
board, while Team USA’s David Boudia/
Steele Johnson should bag hardware in
the platform.

EQUESTRIAN
EQUESTRIANS DON’T JUST
HORSE AROUND
The only Olympic sport in which an animal is involved are the equestrian ones,
which include dressage, jumping and eventing in both individual and team formats.
This is also the only sport where men and women compete against each other.
Horsemanship is the name of the game as the rider’s task is to bring out the ulti-
mate graciousness and athleticism of the animal they command. In some cases
retired (off-the-track) thoroughbreds find their way into the competition. Pan-
American Games gold medalist Boyd Martin and Master Frisky, his Irish Sport
Horse, aim to put the U.S. back in the medal count after coming up short in 2012.
