• As Cassius Clay, won the light heavy-
weight gold medal at the 1960 Summer
Games in Rome
• Went 4-0 in his matches, defeating Yvon
Becaus of Belgium in the second round,
Gennadiy Shatkov of the Soviet Union in the
quarterfi nal, Australia’s Anthony Madigan in
the semifi nal, and Poland’s Zbigniew Pi-
etrzykowski in the fi nal; all were 5-0 decisions
save the stoppage in the second round of his
bout with Becaus
• Lit the Olympic cauldron in the Opening
Ceremony of the 1996 Summer Olympics in
Atlanta
• Made a special appearance in the Open-
ing Ceremony of the 2012 Summer Games in
London
