IT’S YOUR NEWS.
READ ALL ABOUT IT
YOUR WAY.
he Opal Center’s most re-
cent show has once again
utilized the limited stage space
at the small venue.
Bill C. Davis’ “Mass Appeal”
was locally directed by the Opal
Center’s David Work and uses
only two actors, Jim Curtiss and
Matthew Woodward.
Mark Dolson (Woodward)
is a young man aspiring to be
a priest. He’s assigned to be
coached by Father Tim Far-
ley (Curtiss), who is very well
liked in the community. Dolson
is a cynical person and believes
some parts of the church are
wrong. The story touches on
issues within the church such
as the status of women and the
view of homosexuality. As Dol-
son tries to shake things up by
giving more aggressive and per-
haps progressive sermons, Fa-
ther Farley tries to teach Dolson
that he will be more successful
if he adheres to the traditional
values of the church.
Curtiss is wonderfully casted
as the conventional priest with
a heavy drinking habit. The
stuttering, bumbling Father is
a great character, and at times
when it seemed like Curtiss
may have messed up on a line,
the stuttering correction added
to his character. He even did a
pretty good Irish impression for
a time.
Woodward’s character is less
likeable, but the audience roots
for his values. Mark Dolson is
a very serious character, and
Woodward’s straight-forward
acting compliments Curtiss as
the two clash throughout the
show.
While the play didn’t have
the laugh-out-loud comedy of
“You’ve Got Hate Mail,” the
show is driven by skilled act-
ing and strong writing as well as
the values and ethics it tries to
teach. With several sermons be-
ing presented in the play, there
are multiple monologues that
help drive the plot.
Ultimately, “Mass Appeal”
is a more serious show that ad-
dresses issues within the church
that are still seen today.
Hall in Cottage Grove. City Hall
is located at 400 E. Main St.
will emcee the event, which
will also include presentations
by Doyle Shamley of Apache
County, Ariz., Jack Adkins of
FreedomWorks and a panel that
will discuss land use in Oregon.
Oregon Liberty Coalition bills
itself as “a statewide coalition of
local, autonomous, non-partisan
patriot groups established to ad-
vance and strengthen the found-
ing principles and God-given
rights predicated in the U.S. and
Oregon Constitutions.”
