Open Invitation
from Event Chair Sabina Johnson
Relay for Life celebrates its 31st year since Dr. Gordy Klatt took
his fi rst steps on a Tacoma track in 1985 to raise public awareness
of cancer and raise funds for the American Cancer Society. Twenty-
nine years later, not only are communities coming together to further
his cause but 24 countries around the globe have joined in the fi ght
against cancer. In 1997 a group of dedicated volunteers started the
Relay For Life of South Lane County.
This year the Relay For Life of South Lane County celebrates its
19th year of fi ghting back and the communities of Cottage Grove,
Creswell, Dorena, Lorane and
the surrounding areas are invited
to experience the Magic of
Relay at Lincoln Middle School
on July 22nd and 23rd. There
will be 14 teams walking the
track this year.
While the Opening Ceremony
offi cially starts at 5pm on
Friday, July 22nd, everyone is
encouraged to join in the “Pre-
Opening” activities beginning
at Noon. All cancer survivors,
their caregivers and the
community are invited to attend the “Survivor Reception” on Friday
at 4pm. “Opening Ceremonies” start at 5pm with the “Survivor Lap”
immediately following. Following will be a BBQ, prepared by South
Lane County Fire and Rescue beginning at 5:45pm. All registered
Survivors and Caregivers can attend for Free.
Lincoln Middle School held its annual Relay Field Day on May 15
raising over $4100.00 with over 40 teams and more than 300 students
participating. The students had many games and activities going on
and other fundraisers, such as face painting, and food and beverages
for sale. New this year was the biggest bounce house ever in addition
to a school talent show and dance and Vic’s Photobooth. All of us at
the Relay For Life of South Lane County couldn’t be more proud of
Lincoln Middle School's Relay Field Day, as they are not only the
example of how a Relay Field Day event should look and feel for the
State of Oregon and other schools in the U.S., but the World.
Curbing for a Cure was held on June ??, at the corner of 16th and
Main, where over $400 was raised.
The Village Green Resort hosted Relay For Life’s annual “Survivor
Dessert” on June 11. Many prizes were given and laughter was
experienced, along with delicious desserts. The evening was a time
for survivors and their caregivers to meet others that have had similar
experiences in life. Marty Martin was the “Survivor Honoree” and
featured speaker of the evening.
For the past 19 years Relay For Life of South Lane County has
been a major community-
wide experience that goes
overnight. Cancer does not
sleep, and for one night,
Relayers will not sleep
either. Or at least the baton
being passed from team
member to team member
throughout the night will not
rest.
Relay For Life is the
signature fundraiser for the
American Cancer Society
and is an opportunity for the
community to unite. Relay will celebrate survivorship, remember
those who have passed and fi ght back against cancer.
Join us at Lincoln Middle School between Friday, July 22nd, at
Noon thru Saturday, July 23rd, at Noon, to experience the Magic of
Relay at Relay For Life of South Lane County.
