Jane A. Myers
1930-2016
Jane A. Myers, 86, of Cot-
tage Grove passed away July
13, 2016.
She was born Feb. 1, 1930 in
Los Ange-
les, Calif. to
Claude and
Rosalind
(Thomp-
son) David-
son.

ated from Cottage Grove High
School.
On Sept. 14, 1947 in Cottage
Grove, she and Delmer Harry
Myers were married.
She was head meat wrapper
for over 10 years at Gates Meats
Company and a homemaker
raising four children.
Jane had a passion for geneal-
ogy and co-founded the Cottage
Grove Genealogy Society, serv-
ing as president and librarian.
She was the historian for the
Silk Creek Cemetery and com-
posed maps and grave spaces
for Fir Grove Cemetery. Jane
was a member of the Silk Creek
Cemetery Association. She
loved her grandchildren.
Survivors include two daugh-
ters, Nita Myers of Eugene and
Kay (Dennis) Tucker of Cottage
Grove, a son Thomas (Dwayna)
Myers of Drain, a brother Carl
Davidson, Texas, two sisters,
Beryl Davidson of Michigan
and Betty Golden of Califor-
nia, 11 grandchildren, 17 great-
grandchildren and fi ve, plus one
on the way, great-great-grand-
children.
She was preceded in death by
her husband, a son, Arlon My-
ers, and grandson, Gary Myers.
A Celebration of Life was
held at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, July
19, 2016 at the Masonic Lodge
in Cottage Grove with burial
following at 1 p.m. at Silk Creek
Cemetery. Memorial contribu-
tions may be made to the Cot-
tage Grove Genealogy Society,
P.O. Box 388. Arrangements by
Smith-Lund-Mills Funeral Cha-
pel, Cottage Grove.
Marianne “Marti”
Ballance
1951-2016
Lane Wheels.
She was very active in vet-
erans groups, the Disabled
American Veterans, and most
important, supporting veterans.
Marti had PTSD, and having her
service animal gave her a new
life. She also enjoyed quilting,
crafts, genealogy, reading and
was constantly learning new
things. She loved her family.
She is survived by a daugh-
ter, Kelly Ballance of Portland,
Ore., a son, Alan E. Ballance of
Dorena, Ore., and fi ve grand-
children.
A memorial service will be
held at 11 a.m. on Saturday,
July 30, 2016 at Our Lady of
Perpetual Help Catholic Church
in Cottage Grove. Memorial
contributions may be made to
the Oregon Veterans Home,
700 Veterans Dr., The Dallas,
OR 97058. Arrangements by
Smith-Lund-Mills Funeral Cha-
pel, Cottage Grove.
Marianne “Marti” Ballance,
65 of Cottage Grove passed
away July 10, 2016.
She was born Feb. 13, 1951, in
Heidelberg,
Germany to
Edward and
Catharine
(Quinn)
Hansen.

graduated
from Clover
Park High
School in 1969; she received
her AA Degree from Lane Com-
munity College and attended the
University of Oregon for medi-
cal studies.
She was a Petty Offi cer in the
U.S. Navy during the Vietnam
War, a Corpsman during her sec-
ond enlistment and was in Air
Traffi c Control during her fi rst
enlistment. During her military
career, Marti received the Na-
tional Defense Service Medal
and Good Conduct Award.
After the military, Marti was
a dispatcher for the Cottage
Grove Police Department and
operations manager for South
Juileta Schacht Hornbeck ,
92, of Creswell died on June 30
of cancer.
She born March 15, 1924

cinating, butterfl ies fl utter
their way into our gardens and
seem to just as quickly wing
their way out.
It isn’t because they necessar-
ily want to leave, said Heather
Stoven, an entomologist with
the Oregon State University
Extension Service. Rather, they
don’t fi nd what they need to
park themselves permanently.
As detailed in Extension’s
publication The Wildlife Gar-
den: How to Create a Butterfl y
Garden, butterfl ies require spe-
cifi c room and board to have
their needs met. As with all
wildlife, shelter, water and food
are a given, but for butterfl ies,
the range of repast is more lim-
ited.
When butterfl ies change from
egg to larvae, or caterpillar, they
come out ravenous and with
chewing mouthparts, two things
that set them up to damage
plants, a condition gardeners
must tolerate or forgo butterfl ies
except in the most ephemeral
way.

thew Starr of Cottage Grove, a
daughter.
2nd Lieutenant.
She married Donald Schacht
on Oct. 9, 1945 in Springfi eld,
Mo. After his death, she later
married Robert Hornbeck on
March 26, 1988 in Creswell.
Juileta worked for the Smith
Maternity Home in Cot-
tage Grove, and for the Cot-
tage Grove Hospital. She also
worked for Dr. O’Fallon, Dr.
Spaulding, and Dr. Oberg, all in
Cottage Grove.
She enjoyed sewing, making
pine needle baskets, and travel
to Hawaii and Australia. Most
of all, she enjoyed people! She
was a member of the VFW Aux-
iliary, the American Legion, and
the Salvation Army.
Juileta is survived by a son,
Steven Schacht of Crow, Ore.,
two daughters, Mary (Robert)
Currier of Creswell and Marcia
(Byron) Cook of Weiser, Ida-
ho, eight grandchildren and 17
great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death
by both her husbands, Donald
Schacht and Robert Hornbeck.
A memorial service will be
held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, July
23 at Smith-Lund-Mills Chapel
in Cottage Grove.
