leadership conference

ore than 9,380 of America’s best
and brightest high school stu-
dents traveled to Atlanta to connect with
top future business leaders and showcase
their talents as they competed for the op-
portunity to win more than $179,000 in
cash awards.
The Future Business Leaders of Amer-
ica (FBLA) National Leadership Confer-
ence was held June 29–July 2 in Atlanta.
Participants from across the United States
and abroad attended this exciting con-
ference to enhance their business skills,
expand their networks, and participate in
more than 65 business and business-re-
lated competitive events.

competed in Impromptu Speaking and
brought home second place. For the Im-
promptu Speaking event, students are giv-
en a topic, two note cards and 10 minutes
to prepare a four-minute speech related to
one or more of the FBLA goals. At the
end of the 10-minute prep time, students
give their speech in front of judges. “After
the fi nals round I was more confi dent than
I had ever been after a competition, but
when it came down to sitting in the crowd
and waiting for them to call names for top
ten I have never been more nervous. I’m
so lucky to have fi nally reached my ulti-
mate FBLA goal and I couldn’t have done
it without my amazing advisor or the sup-
port of Oregon FBLA,” said Bowen.
