TRACK & FIELD
CONTINUED FROM PG 1B
For the distance events, Bre-
anna Wright made a statement
during her last run by taking
gold in the 1500 and 3000-me-
ter races. Wright fi nished the
1500-meter in just under fi ve
minutes with a time of 4:59.54.
Her fi rst place time of the 3000-
meter run was 11:33.88, and her
junior teammate, Hudson Wey-
bright, fi nished just behind her
with a time of 11:41.29.
In the fi eld events, Brad
Geisler and Jayden Tucker were
both named co-most valuable
fi eld athletes of the meet. Giesler
led the way by taking fi rst place
in the discus with a throw of 133
feet, three inches, and teammate
Seth Green placed second with
128 feet, eight inches. Geisler
also placed second in the shot
put with a distance of 47 feet,
two inches, just barely behind
fi rst placer Tristan Needham of
Sutherlin (48 feet, 0.75 inches).
Tucker similarly took home one
gold and one silver medal for
his jumping performances. In
the long jump, he placed second
with a distance of 21 feet, two
inches. His triple jump, how-
ever, stole fi rst place with a dis-
tance of 41 feet, 10 inches. His
teammate, Tucker Porter, took
second with a strong jump of 39
feet, six inches.
With 18 state qualifi ers, Cot-
tage Grove is in good shape to
continue the success of the track
program. The state meet will
take place this upcoming Friday
and Saturday at Hayward Field
in Eugene.
BASEBALL
CONTINUED FROM PG 1B
pitch an entire game, pitching
all seven innings with an ERA
of exactly one.
Hunter Harris took over for
the next game at home. Harris
also had an ERA of one and al-
lowed only seven hits in six in-
nings. However, the Lions bat-
ting average fell to .280 on the
day.
The two losses for Elmira
bounced the Falcons down to
third place with a 9-6 league
record, and Sisters took sec-
ond with a 10-5 record. Cottage
Grove held its top position with
a 13-2 record.
D. Redmond and King
win during Friday night
thriller at CG Speedway
The Lions now look towards
the play offs, where their fi rst
contest is against Blanchet
Catholic on Saturday. The Cav-
aliers are a menacing team that
went 15-0 in league play and
has scored up to as many as 27
runs in one game. But Blanchet
Catholic is a 3A school, and its
entire season has been fi lled
with lighter competition. The
Lions have overcome 5A and
6A schools this year. So, even a
team that still holds a 15-game
winning streak and hasn’t lost
since April 8 will need to be
very wary when facing Cottage
Grove on Saturday.
If you missed the May 13, $5
Fast Friday, then you missed
one of the best races of the
whole season. Despite only two
classes on the card, a great turn-
out of 48 cars would fi ll the pit
area. The two classes were the
Clark Printing Extreme Sprints
and Dwarf Cars.
Sixteen Clark Printing Ex-
treme Sprints signed in on the
registration sheets and they had
a thrilling race. Medford teen-
ager Bailey Hibbard showed the
way for the most laps. Hibbard
took the lead on the opening
lap and it seemed that he was
on his way to his fi rst career
victory. Two cautions kept the
fi eld bunched up but Hibbard
was good on the restarts.
As the race started to enter
the fi nal stages, some heavy
lapped traffi c was approaching
the leaders. Roseburg’s Dusty
Redmond was able to somehow
fi nd a way to master the bottom
when the high side seemed to be
the fastest way around, and he
got past Hibbard with just a few
laps to go. Redmond managed
to create a little bit of space
to have some breathing room.
When the checkered fl ag was
dropped it was Redmond with
the victory and the second time
that the No. 57 Rocket entry has
visited victory lane in 2016.
Orion Redmond, also from
Roseburg (and Dusty’s son),
edged out Hibbard for second
place at the line. The rest of the
top fi ve was made up of Albany
teenager Bricen James, driving
for car owner Tim Galloway,
and Eugene’s Raquel Ivie in
fi fth.
Ivie was fast time of the
night, and the winner of the
Dot’s Trophy Shop Trophy Dash
was Medford native Dave Hib-
bard. Heat race winners were
Medford’s Brandi Crockett and
Ricky Ashley from Thurston.
A whopping 32 Dwarf Cars
would make the trip from the
states of Oregon, Washington,
and California. Kelso, Wash-
ington’s Jess Turner Sr., was the
leader of lap one. Turner lost
the lead on lap three to Eagle
Point chauffeur Brock Peters.
Peters looked to complete a
clean sweep after dominating
preliminary action.
Unfortunately for Brock Pe-
ters, he was passed on lap nine
by Josh King. King, who now
resides in Red Bluff, California,
checked out from the rest of the
fi eld, but several cautions didn’t
allow him to build too big of a
lead. He briefl y lost the lead
to Medford’s Kalvin Morton,
but the yellow would come out
giving the lead back to King.
King would master the rest of
the restarts to put himself in the
winner’s circle.
Kalvin Morton was the run-
ner-up, while third went to
Brock Peters. Molalla’s Henry
Corbin III crossed fourth, and
Jess Turner Sr. ended his night
in fi fth. Heat races were won
by Josh King, Rob Gergel from
Grants Pass, Brock Peters and
Kalvin Morton. Peters was able
to top the fi eld in the Dot’s Tro-
phy Shop Trophy Dash, while
Grant Pass driver Kaycee Sheel-
er was victorious in the consola-
tion feature.
After getting rained out last
Saturday, Cottage Grove Speed-
way is excited to get back to rac-
ing this weekend. Everything
gets kicked off on Friday, May
20 with the Kage Karts as they
will be on hand for their second
race of the season. The Satur-
day, May 21, will feature the
Wingless Sprint Series, IMCA
Modifi eds, IMCA Sport Mods,
and the Quality RV Repair Hor-
nets for Armed Forces Night.
There will be a special Military
price for $5 on Saturday.
On Friday for the Kart races
General Admission is free and
Pit Passes are $10, and Car and
Driver fees will be $35. The Pit
Gate will open up around 4 p.m.
and the Pit Meeting is at 6 p.m.
with Hot Laps and Racing to
follow.
The Wingless Sprint Series
is in its inaugural season as the
parties of the Northwest Wing-
less Tour and the Oregon Double
Shot Series got back together
to form one unifi ed Non-Wing
organization this past offsea-
son. They have raced just once
and Rob Lindsey swept the fi rst
round of competition at Madras
Speedway on May 7.
The IMCA Modifi eds have
yet to see a repeat winner as
they have had four different
drivers visit victory lane. Col-
len Winebarger, Craig Hanson,
Mark Wauge, and Kinzer Cox
have all tasted success in the
2016 season. The opposite can
be stated for the IMCA Sport
Mods with Jorddon Braaten the
only driver to have managed to
win this season. Braaten has
won all two Sport Mod races at
CGS in the current campaign.
Last but not least in the Qual-
ity RV Repair Hornets a streak
is on the line. Josh Corley has
been the class of the fi eld by
winning the last three features
consecutively. K.C. Scott, who
won on opening night, is the
only other main event winner in
the division.
