Willa Allen Hoopes
1923-2016
Willa Allen Hoopes, 93,
passed away Saturday morning,
April 23, 2016, in La Pine, Ore.
where she was residing.
She was born in Taloga,
Okla. on Oct. 16, 1923, one of
10 brothers
and sisters
born to Ev-
erette An-
derson and
Laura Myr-
tle (Tarr)
Allen.
At
the
age of fi ve, she and her family
moved to Cottage Grove, Ore.
where she resided for 86 years.
There she met Wilbur Hoopes,
and they were married on Nov.
15, 1945.
She loved hunting, fi shing
and camping with Wilbur and
her family. Willa focused her
life on being a good housewife,
taking care of her children and
studying the word of God. She
enjoyed spending time watch-
ing birds and taking care of her
plants.
Willa had been a member of
the First Baptist Church of Cot-
tage Grove since she was 12
years old.
Survivors include Linda Geer
of La Pine, Ore., Vern Hoopes
of Cottage Grove, Ore., three
grandchildren and eight great-
grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by
nine brothers and sisters.
A memorial service will be
held at a later date. Arrange-
ments under the care of Baird
Memorial Chapel, La Pine,
Ore.
Roger Alvin Wetzell
1942-2015
Roger Alvin Wetzell, 72, of
Yoncalla, Ore. passed away Oct.
15, 2015.
He was born Dec. 19, 1942
in Eugene,
Ore.
to
Elmer A.
and Helen
(Randall)
Wetzell.
He grad-
uated from
Cottage
Grove High
School in 1961. Roger retired
from the U.S. Air Force and had
been a welder on submarines in
the U.S. Navy. He was an enter-
tainer in many different bands,
playing Fender guitar. Roger
also played guitar and sang in
competitions for the Air Force.
He enjoyed rock-n-roll, country
western and loved the blues.
He married Donna (Hutchin-
son) Hoefl igger on Feb. 14,
2013 in Drain, Ore.
Roger is survived by his wife
Donna, two daughters, Diana
of Alabama and Tina of Flori-
da, two stepdaughters, Lillian
of Idaho and Tamara of Calif.,
two stepsons, Rory of Yoncalla,
Ore. and Jimmy of Idaho, three
brothers, Bob Wetzell of Port-
land, Ore., Darrell Wetzell of
Springfi eld, Ore., and David
Wetzell of Molalla, Ore., two
sisters, Connie of New Mexico
and Bonnie of Prineville, Ore.,
11 grandchildren and three
great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by
his parents and brother, Doug
Wetzell.
A Memorial Service will be at
1 p.m. Saturday, May 7, 2016 at
149 Curtis Creek Road in Yon-
calla. Arrangements in the care

Allen
1955-2016
Helen M. Picknell-Allen, 61,
of Cottage Grove died April 9,
2016 of COPD and heart fail-
ure.
Helen
was born in
Arcata, Ca-
lif. to Roy
and Agnes
(Sanders)
Picknell.
She grad-
uated from
high school in 1973 and attend-
ed Lane Community College.
On Dec. 31, 1975, she and
Floyd Allen were married in
Cottage Grove. They later di-
vorced.
Helen was a laborer at
Agripac for 22 years. After ill-
ness hit, she enjoyed watching
TV and eating out. She was a
member of AA/NA.
She is survived by a
daughter, Amy A. Short of Cre-
swell, two sisters, Shirley Pick-
nell and Dottie Frizielle, both of
Cottage Grove, a brother, Larry
Smith of Sutherlin, and three
grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by
a brother, John Smith.
A graveside inurnment will be
at 1 p.m. on Thursday, May 12 at
Fir Grove Cemetery in Cottage
Grove. Arrangements are in the
care of Smith-Lund-Mills Cha-
Gayland Lavern
Osburn
1926-2016
Gayland Lavern Osburn, 89,
of Lafayette, Ore. died April 29,
2016.
He was born in Mountain Air,
N.M., on Dec. 8, 1926 to Otis
Lee and Violet Brunett (Bass)
Osburn.
He was
a Glendale,
Califor-
nia
High
School
graduate.
Gayland
started trav-
eling with
Evangelist
Paul Nichols at the age of 17.
He did the work of an evange-
list most of his life, traveling
the U.S. He helped start the
church work in Malawi, Africa,
and also several locations in the
Northwest U.S.
On June 12, 1952 in Glendale,
Calif., he and Coleene Roetta
Everett were married.
Besides the ministry, he
worked for South Lane School
District for 27 years as a bus
driver and retired as Head Cus-
todian of Harrison Elementary
School in 1989. Since then he
has worked with several church-
es in the Northwest.
He and his wife settled in
Lafayette, Ore. to be close to
two of their children. He was
a Do-it-yourself-er!! He did
mechanic work, carpentry, and
remodeling, training his chil-
dren to work with him. He also
enjoyed hunting. But he was
most passionate about serving
the church.
Gayland is survived by his
wife, Coleene Roetta, four sons,
Glen Roland (Reba) Osburn of
Blanchard, Okla., Terry Wayne
(Vicky) Osburn of Bakersfi eld,
Calif., Ralph Douglas (Roberta)
Osburn of Newberg, Ore., and
Tracy Alan (Sandie) Osburn of
McMinnville, Ore., two daugh-
ters, Paula Jean Osburn of Ken-
newick, Wash. and Linda Marie
(Wendell) Birdsong of Jacks-
boro, Tenn., 20 grandchildren
and eight great-grandchildren,
with a ninth on the way.
Visitation will be held Satur-
day, May 7 at 11 a.m. at Smith-
Lund-Mills Funeral Chapel
with a funeral service following
Elton Lee Hale
1930-2016
Elton Lee “Reno” Hale, 85,
died April 29, 2016.
He was born on Oct. 1, 1930
in Tujunga, Calif. to Harris Gar-
ner and Cleo Anita (Burcky)
Hale.
He served
in the U.S.
Navy
as
an
MN2
in Kodiak,
Alaska and
in
Japan
until
an
electrical accident resulted in
the loss of his arm and a subse-
quent medical discharge.
On Oct. 27, 1951 (Navy Day)
in Long Beach, Calif., he and
Parna Pinkley Finley were mar-
ried.
After completing his family,
he went on to earn an Associ-
ate Degree in Physics, and was
self-taught in art, carpentry, and
welding. Elton worked in custo-
dial and maintenance, and was a
Tech Writer for Hughes Aircraft
until a down trend in the Aero-
space industry.
He enjoyed trains, model
trains, science, being outdoors,
and creating art. He was a
member of the Church of Jesus
Christ of Latter-Day Saints and
the Dorena Grange in Cottage
Grove.
He is survived by this wife,
Parna, of Cottage Grove, three
daughters, Connie Lane of Salt
Lake City, Utah, Lyndi Holst of
Cottage Grove and Lori Mingus
of Cottage Grove, a son, David
Hale of Sandy, Ore., a sister,
Dagna MacGill of California,
17 grandchildren and 16 great-
grandchildren.
A funeral will be held at 10
a.m. on Thursday, May 5, at
the Church of Jesus Christ of
Latter-Day Saints in Cottage
Grove. Memorial contributions
may be made to DAV (Disabled
American Vets) or to the Dorena
Grange. Arrangements under
the care of Smith-Lund-Mills
Funeral Chapel, Cottage Grove.
