More Dorena news:
Staff vs. Students:
It was all tied up!
On Thursday before Spring
Break, Dorena students took on
the staff in a game of basket-
ball. Neither side won bragging
rights, but both sides are ready
for a rematch. Student players
included boys and girls from
grades 4-8. Other students made
signs, took a cheerleading role
or just had fun watching. The
fi rst day back, the school ran out
of basketballs at recess because
so many students were already
preparing for a rematch.
Harvest of the
month and getting
growing
vegetable, but the green leaves
are also delicious and can be
added to salads or soups! Rad-
ishes are an excellent source of
Vitamin C.
The Ems’ Sluggo
challenged Dorena
to get a home run
in reading
The challenge was to read
10 books or 10 chapters (of
the teacher’s decision) by May
13. Students that met the chal-
lenge received two free tickets
for a Eugene Emeralds baseball
game. They will be invited onto
the fi eld at PK Park to meet the
Em’s and participate in a special
event.
April’s featured Harvest of the

at Dorena
Melissa Fery, the new Farm
to School facilitator, has got-
ten a blooming start in her new
position. At Dorena, an ex-
pert on watering systems has
visited and will be helping the
school get an irrigation plan up
and running. Fery is putting
tool kits together for kinder-
garten and second grade lev-
els for the “Eat,Think,Grow”
curriculum. The tool kits will
include a USB drive and printed
copies of the curriculum along
with the picture book resources
and other supplies. The school
has monthly farm to school tast-
ing tables and a brand new pile
of rich topsoil to help them dig
in and get started. Students re-
cently harvested kale. The fava
beans planted in fall are well on
the way, and the school has new
potatoes in with its volunteers
that popped up.
