COTTAGE GROVE SENTINEL April 13, 2016

GOLF SCORES
SPEEDWAY
CONTINUED FROM PG 1B
and Redmond ace Mark Car-
rell.
In Late Model competition the
main event would see an action
packed feature. Twenty Late
Models would be in attendance
for night one. In the feature,
Salem pilot Britton Donahoo
would seize the early race lead.
He would remain there for quite
some time before being over-
taken by Darren Coffell, shortly
after a lap 12 restart. Coffell
maintained the position for the
remainder of the race to put #46
Rocket in victory lane.
Rob Mayea from Bend was
the runner-up, followed by Brit-
ton Donahoo in third. Fourth
place would go to Thomas Hun-
zier, also from Bend, while fi n-
ishing fi fth was Coos Bay’s Eric
Luckman.
Thomas Hunziker was the fast
time of the night in time trials.
Thursday, April 7
Game: 3-2-1 Best Ball
Heat race winners were Hunzik-
er, Springfi eld driver Paul Cup
and Eric Luckman.
The Street Stocks would be
a good mix of Cottage Grove
Speedway regulars as well as
several visitors from a few dif-
ferent tracks. Cottage Grove's
Evan Britton would be the early
leader. Britton would lose the
lead around lap four to Chris
Sine. Sine, out of Eugene,
would hold off the competition
to win the race.
Andrew Langan of Jasper was
a close second in his familiar #74
Nova, while the #36 Camaro of
Portland’s Jody Tanner placed
third. Evan Britton would end
the evening in fourth, and the
#11 Camaro of Joey Cannon
from Portland in fi fth. It would
be a complete clean sweep for
Chris Sine as he set fast time
and won the heat race in addi-
tion to his main event triumph.
Last but not least was the
Quality RV Repair Hornets.
K.C. Scott got to the front early
in the #30 machine. There would
be a fair number of stoppages in
the feature, but Scott, of Spring-
fi eld, would stay in front of the
fi eld the rest of the way despite
being held up briefl y in lapped
traffi c in the last few laps.
Harrisburg’s James McClure
had an impressive second place
fi nish in his #80 entry, and be-
hind him in third would be Mike
Simmons of Cottage Grove. The
balance of the top fi ve would be
comprised of Marcola’s Bran-
don Letsom in fourth and Mike
Swaim of Dexter, despite spin-
ning coming across the line, in
the #48 car.
Mike Simmons would be the
fastest qualifi er during time tri-
als. Mike Simmons, Brandon
Letsom, and Mike Swaim were
the three heat race winners dur-
ing the course of the evening.
TRACK AND FIELD
CONTINUED FROM PG 1B
Tharpe told the Sentinel that
he was feeling strong about the
hurdles, and during his prelimi-
nary run, his coach hand-clocked
him at about 14.9, although
hand-clocked runs are usually
inaccurate. However, this past
Friday, Tharpe took control of
the high hurdles and not only
took home gold, but beat his PR
with a time of 15 seconds fl at.
His coach’s hand-clocked time
may not have been very inaccu-
rate. The senior is now poised to
break 15 seconds, which would
put him in a great position for a
state title in the high hurdles.
Jacob Woods continued to
show promise in the high hur-
dles, fi nishing third overall with
a time of 16.80 seconds.
Tharpe also took home silver
in the 300-meter hurdles with a
time of 43 seconds fl at. Sopho-
more Hayden Glenn fi nished
in third just 0.4 seconds slower
than his senior teammate.
In throwing, Brad Geisler
led the way for Cottage Grove.
Geisler fi nished eighth in the
shot put event with a distance
of 38 feet, 11.25 inches. This is
a slight improvement from last
week’s 38 feet, 10 inches. The
senior also fi nished in fourth in
the discus throw with a distance
of 126 feet. Seth Green fi nished
just behind Geisler with 121
feet, one inch.
In other fi eld events, Cot-
tage Grove didn’t fi nd any gold
medals, but still made it to the fi -
nals with strong fi nishes. Junior
Tucker Porter placed fi fth (the
same place in the Marist Clas-
sic), but increased his distance
by about a foot with a jump of
20 feet, 1.25 inches. In the triple
jump, Porter placed third with
an almost identical jump as last
week, just 0.75 inches further
with a distance of 40 feet, 4.75
inches.
The girls’ performance didn’t
stand out as much as the boys’
this week due to some lingering
health issues. Hannah Albrecht
scratched in the 100-meter dash
and didn’t compete in the 400-
meter race, an event she is very
successful in. She was fi ghting
an illness last week but still
managed to fi nish in second in
the 400-meter dash, clocking
in at 62.12 seconds. The fastest
time at the Springfi eld meet was
over three seconds slower.
As the squad begins to en-
ter the bulk of their season, the
Lions seem to be moving in
the right direction. After heavy
competition against 5A and 6A
schools, Cottage Grove will
be a threatening team in future
meets.
