BASEBALL
CONTINUED FROM PG 1B
Each time the Lions had
someone on fi rst base, Geiszler
would initially signal for the
base runner to wait until a bad
pitch was thrown. But if that
didn’t happen, many players
found themselves stealing sec-
ond base regardless.
“If we have a guy on fi rst, we
want that to mean he’s going to
be on second,” Geiszler said.
The play calling is very aggres-
sive, even though it sometimes
doesn’t work out. For instance,
Ryan East misread a signal and
didn’t steal on a bad pitch and
was then tagged out stealing a
few pitches later. Another out
came from a questionable call
by the umpire.
“We don’t want them to be
discouraged,” Geiszler said, “we
tell them that if they get called
out, that’s our fault.” Geiszler
said that the aggressive stance
on base running has been fairly
successful so far. At the end of
the game, Geiszler reported the
Lions to have 30 stolen bases on
the season compared to their op-
ponents’ 10. According to those
stats and the way the Lions ran
during the Stayton game, the
aggressive base-running calls
seem to pay off.
The Lions capped off the
week with another win against
Creswell on Saturday, beating
the Bulldogs 10-4.
Cottage Grove enters league
play this week with its fi rst
match against Sisters and then
against Sutherlin. The 5-4 Lions
enter they Sky-Em competition
having already been tested by
strong 5A and 6A talent and
should be prepared for their
league opponents.

SOUTH VALLEY ATHLETICS
South Valley Athletics would like to say thank you to everyone who made this
another great season of basketball for the kids of our community! A special thank
you goes out to Mike McCarty, who has run our camp for almost 40 years! He retired
from running camp so that he can enjoy spending time with his family. We appreciate
everything he has done for our program over the years. A lot of kids (too many to count)
have learned so much and had a great time playing basketball with him. We wish him
all the best in his free time!
We would also like to say thank you to all of our coaches, referees and SVA staff who
spent countless hours prepping and teaching the kids the great game of basketball.
There were endless smiles all through the season, once again.
Thank you to South Lane School District and Riverside Church for allowing us to use
the gyms for practices and games. Without the space, we wouldn’t have a place for our
teams to practice and play games.
A huge thank you goes out to our sponsors this season - we were able to have a
sponsor for every team this year, which is amazing! The money goes right back to the
program, purchasing new equipment or to help kids who are less fortunate and may
not have been able to play.
