Dr. Marten Reintjes, 83,
passed away on Saturday,
January 16 th at Magnolia
Village in Cottage Grove, OR
after a prolonged battle with
Alzheimers.
Marten is survived
by his wife of 58 years,
Elsie Reintjes; son Maurice
Reintjes and wife Sally of
Beaverton, OR; son Eric
Reintjes and wife Diane
of Palmdale, CA; fi ve
grandchildren, and one great-
grandchild.
He was born March 13 th , 1932 to Hubert and Dina Reintjes
in Meeden, Netherlands, the eldest of 7 children. At the age of
20, after a two year wait to get a visa due to the quota system,
he immigrated to the United States. In his travels from port of
embarkation in New York to his sponsor’s destination in Garden
Grove, CA, he was awed by the vastness and beauty of his soon-
to-be adopted country.
Marten joined the US Army that same year, serving during
the Korean Confl ict from 1952-55. He was stationed in West
Germany, and while serving there was instrumental in assisting the
rest of his immediate family in immigrating to the United States.
After his service he returned to California, attending schools
to earn his Associates and Bachelor’s degrees in Chemistry.
During this time, he met Elsie and they were married in the
summer of 1957. His studies culminated in the award of a PhD
in Chemistry from UC Riverside and a position as a research
chemist at Arapaho Chemicals in Boulder, Colorado. In 1968, he
accepted a new position with ITT Rayonier at their pulp and paper
research laboratory in Shelton, Washington, where he worked until
retirement. During his career with Rayonier, he was awarded a
number of patents for his research.
Marten and Elsie moved to Cottage Grove in 2004, where
they were members of Riverside Community Church and Trinity
Lutheran Church.
Marten’s interests included playing the organ in church (self-
taught), building an electronic theatre organ, singing in church
choirs at various churches he attended through his life, and working
on his house. While living in Shelton, he doubled the size of his
existing home and built a second house, performing virtually all of
the construction with only the help of his wife and sons.
Marten was a wonderful husband and amazing father. He
supported, respected and loved Elsie unconditionally, and was
a teacher, mentor, guide and sage to his sons. His presence here
on earth will be missed, but Marten was a man of strong faith,
believing in the resurrection and life in Jesus Christ that awaited
him after his passing.
A private burial for Marten was held at Willamette National
Cemetery on 21 January.
