Bond planning for new
Harrison school progresses
A community conversation brought about
25 community members to Harrison School
on Jan. 18 to see plans in development for a
new Harrison School at the former CGHS site.
Planning committees are developing a bond to
replace the aging school for the May of 2016
election. Mike Gorman of BLRB Architects
(above) presented conceptual drawings of the
new school (a picture of one drawing is at right).

T HE ART OF THE INTERVIEW
M
uch of Cottage Grove High School's sophomore class took part in
mock job interviews with members of the Cottage Grove business
community on Friday. Interviews took fi ve to seven minutes each, and stu-
dents were scored on the conventions of a proper interview, including wheth-
er they provided a resume for their interviewer; the appropriateness of their
dress and greeting; if questions were answered with depth and confi dence and
how the interview concluded. The process was supervised by Marc Bass of
the Reaching Out Mentoring program.

Gym at LMS gets new paint
W
hile many of us were
busy with the holi-
day season, Mark Dreiling,
P.E. teacher at Lincoln Middle
School, was putting in more
than his share of work and
pride into Lincoln Middle
School. According to Dreiling,
the paint was from the original
construction of the gym in 1961.
He donated many hours of time
in order to paint and improve
the safety and appearance of the
gymnasiums.
Dreiling solicited the help
of other volunteers, including
Jeff Dreiling, Tim Dreiling,
Larry Dreiling, James and Ben
Deatherage, Ryan West, Bill
Thompson, Jason Corwin, Rob-
ert and Jacob Hamil, Jeff Bas-
cue, Iverson and Carter Bascue,
Kyle Kishen, Lydia Shipley, Tre
Gray, Joyce and Jim Settelmey-
er, Peter Buekea, Jeremy Smith
and countless others. They were
able to complete the project in
six days.

about the improvements to the
gym.
The work, however, did not
stop there. The staff room also
received an update. This work
was completed by the parent
club, volunteers and staff.
”It’s beautiful,” said Jenny
Ladd, offi ce staff. Thank you
to all that made these improve-
ments possible. As Dreiling
said, “It is important to give
back.”

hosting its fi rst Parents Night
Out event on Friday, Feb. 12
from 5–9 p.m. Besides trained
supervisors like educational as-
sistants, teachers and principals,
the evening will offer a movie,
healthy snacks, a craft room,
fi tness games and board games.
The cost is $10 per child or a

raised will provide scholarships
for student fi eld trips.
KINDERGARTEN! What
an exciting time! So exciting,
adults write about it later in
life and
proclaim it to
be one of their most impor-
tant experiences ever. We in
South Lane believe that too.
Welcome to South Lane
School District. We are proud
of the learning opportunities
we provide children in Cot-
tage Grove, and we will work
hard to get your kindergar-
ten experience off to a great
start.
The kindergarten pre-reg-
istration on Wednesday, Feb.
10 is the fi rst step to ensuring
a successful school experi-
ence. You will be provided
with information at your
registration visit that will
assist you in getting your
child ready for kindergarten.
You will also receive a great
checklist to ensure a smooth
and enjoyable beginning for
you and your child.
Please visit the KITS reg-
istration table at the pre-reg-
istration event. KITS (Kids
In Transition To School) is a
fantastic FREE summer pro-
gram for you and your child
to learn about and practice
the important kindergarten
readiness skills to support
your child’s successful tran-
sition into kindergarten.
A successful kindergarten
experience can serve as the
foundation for years to come.
There are numerous ways for
you to get involved, and stay
involved with your child’s
school experience. If you are
interested in volunteering in
your child’s school, please
contact the principal or of-
fi ce manager for how to get
signed up.
We would like to be of as-
sistance to you in any way
possible. Please feel free to
contact me, or any members
of your neighborhood school
staff. If you are unable to at-
tend on Feb. 10, please call
your school and ask them to
add your child to the Kinder-
garten 2016-17 roster.
We have three core beliefs
in South Lane:
Children come fi rst!
Decision making is student-
centered
Children learn best when
they want to be at school
Sincerely,
Krista D. Parent,
Superintendent
