After being up 15-14 at half-
time, the Lions were unable to
maintain their lead or pull away,
being outscored by Sisters 16-
10 in the third quarter. Although
the fourth quarter saw a 5-3 run
by the Lions to inch closer to
tying the game, Cottage Grove
largely was unable to capitalize
on their possessions.
The game largely rested on
the shoulders of senior Melissa
Thielman, who had 15 points,
four rebounds and a steal on
the night. Thielman’s 15 points
were the most points by any oth-
er Lion by at least nine points.
The senior also had the game’s
only three-point shot.
Keara Murphy was the Lions
second highest scorer with six
points. The sophomore also had
fi ve rebounds and two blocks
on the night. Other scorers were
Hannah Arnold (four points),
Taylor Harsh (three points) and
Sierra Blomquist (two points).
The Lions then traveled to
Junction City on Friday, where
they faced an even tougher chal-
lenge against the Tigers.
Again, the Lions weren’t
completely down and out, but
once Junction City took a quick
11-6 fi rst-quarter lead, they
didn’t look back.
Cottage Grove made nine of
38 fi eld goals (23 percent) but
weren’t far behind a similar 12
of 41 (29 percent) rate by the
Tigers.
Blomquist led with six points
off of two three-point shots, fol-
lowed closely by Harsh, who
scored fi ve points and sank one
from three-point range as well.
The game saw the return of
Delia Nichols-Ferguson, the
senior who suffered a concus-
sion against South Umpqua on
Jan. 5. The Junction City game
also saw the fi rst time for Mur-
phy to start. She and Blomquist
are the only sophomores on the
team. Murphy had two points
that game.
Yoss says that despite the
losses, the spirits of the girls
have yet to be dampened.
“Even though we lost both
games, the girls are still positive
and upbeat,” he said.
And they will have to be as
they continue on into league-
play. Cottage Grove started
off 0-6 before grabbing their
fi rst win at Siuslaw. The Lions
then went on a four-game los-
ing streak before beating South
Umpqua and Philomath in back-
to-back wins. Now they stare
down another four-game los-
ing streak as they host Suther-
lin and Sweet Home this week.
Every day is an opportunity to
improve and Lion fans can only
hope that the girls’ can endure
this season’s struggles.
Boys' Basketball
CONTINUED FROM PG 1B
Neither team could pull away
from the other throughout the
entire game. The largest lead the
Lions ever had was by fi ve, and
for the Tigers it was seven.
In the fi nal minute, it was
Junction City that went on a 7-0
run to go up by fi ve in the fi nal
minute of the game. That’s when
Sentman hit his three-pointer
followed by fouling Junction
City as the result of Cottage
Grove’s full-court press. On a
one-and-one opportunity, Isaac
Potter of Junction City missed
the free throw, which was the
undoing of the Tigers as the Li-
ons rebounded and charged the
basket with Sentman’s fl oater
forcing overtime.
“They’re hard to play against,”
Pollard said. “They take care of
the basketball, they move the
thing. They spread you out.”
During Cottage Grove’s fi nal
possession, the Tigers had three
opportunities to snag a rebound
to seal the game, but after a shot
by Sentman was blocked, Par-
ent jumped on the loose ball and
forced a foul, sending him to
the line and ultimately a thrill-
ing victory.
Tucker Porter and Hunter
Gipson scored eight points
along with Jaydun Ducker and
Chance Hopkins, who had four
apiece.
Throughout the 2015-2016
season, Cottage Grove has
shown an extremely high level
of poise by being able to pull
out wins during neck-and-
neck games. From Stayton to
Philomath and to Junction City,
overtime has meant winning
time for the Lions.
Parent alludes to team chem-
istry in order to get the wins
they need.
“Most of us have been play-
ing together for a long time, and
we’re competitors to the very
end,” he said. “It’s all about
working together to get the
win.”
The win now puts the Lions
on an eight-game winning streak
and they are now at the top of
the Sky-Em League and remain
at fi fth place in the state.
