On Friday, the Lion wrestling
team played host to Cascade,
North Marion and Philomath in
the Region Two Crossover Dual
meet. Cottage Grove struggled,
falling just short to Cascade 37-
31, lost to North Marion, 53-
18 but managed to overcome
Philomath, 48-26.
Cascade started off well
against the Lions, as Richelle
Rolfe fell to Devin Privratsky
from a pin in the fi rst period.
However, Cottage Grove’s Aar-
on Boitz responded with two
takedowns in the third period
against Darien Fagin, winning
5-2 by decision. After Cascade’s
Marshal Christman’s 16-3 major
decision over Chan Kripeerapan,
Cottage Grove bounced back
with three wins in a row. Bryce
Allen pinned Adam Stratemeyer
near the end of the fi rst period,
giving his team a much needed
six points. Rodney Chamberlain
then won by major decision 10-
2 over Connor Kelly, but then
Rafe Barkely fell to a pin by Asa
Alexander in the fi rst period.
The Bordeaux twins did well;
Alan Bordeaux pinned James
Baxter in overtime after eight
and a half minutes of combat.
Andrew Bordeaux won by an
8-2 decision after three periods
over Hayes VanDeHey.
The Lions lost the next four
matchups in a row until Chance
Ralston pinned Brook Petterson
in the fi rst period; however, the
Cougar’s lead was too great, and
Cottage Grove came up short,
37-31.
The Cottage Grove H.S. var-
sity chess team has gotten off to
a slow start this season, winning
one match (4-1) against Junc-
tion City, and losing to South
Eugene (0.5-4.5), Willamette (2-
3) and Pleasant Hill (1-4). The
Lions have hopes of fi nishing
league play with an even record
by winning their two remain-
ing league matches this week
against Sheldon and next week
against Marist. Players on the
team have included senior Ben
Bauml, juniors Chris Glesmann
and Justin Long, sophomores
Spencer Falk and Alex Reimann
and freshman Alex Istudor.
The Lions JV chess team
has gained a 2-2 league record
thus far, with players including
freshmen Zeak Bray and Taylor
Henry, joined by Latham E.S.
fi fth-grader Maia Wilhour.
On Saturday, Jan. 16, Chris
Glesmann, fi rst board on the
Cottage Grove H.S. team, won
three games and lost one to take
fi rst place in the Advanced Di-
vision of the Winter Carnival
Chess Tournament held at South
Eugene H.S.

Lions lead Sky-Em after
overtime thriller in Junction City
After winning eight in a row, the Lions fi nd themselves as the No. 1 team in the Sky-Em League
BY SAM WRIGHT
The Cottage Grove Sentinel
If there is one word to describe
the Lions’ basketball season this
year, it would most defi nitely be
‘clutch.’ Cottage Grove has gone
into overtime in several games
this year, and it seems that they
always manage to come out on
top in these thrillers; much like
Friday night’s game against
Junction City, where the Lions
emerged victorious, 62-61, after
yet another overtime battle.
The game was sealed (barely)
by junior Kory Parent, who was
sent to the free-throw line with
3.5 seconds left in overtime.
Parent unfl inchingly sank both
shots to give the Lions the lead.
All Junction City could do after
that was take a desperate shot
from half-court which bounced
off the backboard as the buzzer
went off.
“I love to be in crunch time,”
Parent said. “Those are the mo-
ments I play for, I had a smile
on my face when I stepped up
to the line.”
And the smile most likely
stayed imprinted on his face the
entire bus ride home.
Parent and Blake Sentman
each had 19 points, keeping
the Lions in the game down
the stretch. Parent scored six of
Cottage Grove’s eight points in
overtime, and Sentman scored
eight of the Lions’ 10 fourth-
quarter points.
Sentman
quite
possibly
equally saved the day as much
as Parent. With 27 seconds left,
the junior pulled up for a three-
pointer, bringing a fi ve-point
defi cit in the fi nal 30 seconds
down to two, and then pulled
something the Register-Guard
described as a “spinning one-
handed fl oater” with seven sec-
onds left, which tied the game
and forced overtime.
“They don’t give up, they just
keep hammering away,” said
Head Coach Don Pollard of his
team.
There’s also something to be
said about the way the game
was fi nally won. This was a
game that saw a total of 20
missed free throws (11 of which
came from Junction City) yet it
was Parent (4-7 for free throws
on the night) who shot 100per-
cent from the line when it truly
counted.
Along with the Tigers’ missed
free throws, there were six turn-
overs near the end of the game
that cost Junction City the win.
“You’re going to have one
of those [games],” said Tigers’
Head Coach Craig Rothenberg-
er. “You just hope you don’t
have it against a team the caliber
of Cottage Grove.”

CG back on another
losing streak
Despite several fi rst place fi n-
ishes, the boys’ swim team was
unable to overcome North Eu-
gene during its meet on Friday,
Jan. 15. The loss came not from
the Lions’ inability to win races
(many race times exceeded ex-
pectations), but simply because
North Eugene presented more
swimmers than Cottage Grove,
giving the Highlanders a dis-
tinct point advantage.
The meet started out well
with Seth Chambers, Johnny
Witt, Ian Dukes and Joseph Pi-
fer fi nishing the 133-meter med-
ley relay with a fi rst place time
of 2:49.41.
Ethan Burleson and Pifer
placed second and third respec-
tively in the 200-meter free-
style with times of 2:09.8 and
2:21.97.
Witt and Chambers helped
maintain a Lion lead in the third
event, the 133-meter individual
medley with times of 1:26.55
and 1:30.96. Witt placed fi rst
and Chambers placed third, and
the Lions held a lead of 29-25.

Girl Lions look
to bounce back
The boys' swim team wasn't down against North Eugene because a lack of success in the pool, but being outnum-
bered hindered their chances of racking up points.
It’s been the story of the sea-
son for the girls’ basketball team
as Head Coach Kevin Yoss and
company continuously search
for answers. The Lions now fi nd
themselves on another four-
game losing streak after falling
to Sisters and Junction City this
past week. Cottage Grove (3-14,
0-3 Sky-Em) traveled to Sisters
on Tuesday, Jan. 19 and fought
a hard game, eventually falling
to the Outlaws 33-30. The Lions
shot better from the fi eld than
Sisters, sinking 13 of 39 fi eld
goals (33 percent) compared to
the Outlaws’ 12 of 42 (28 per-
cent), but it was free throws
that ultimately failed the Lions.
Were the free-throw game made
irrelevant, the Lions could have
walked away with a 27-24 vic-
tory. However, the Lions only
made three out of nine of their
free throws, and the Outlaws
managed to sink nine of the 13
shots taken from the line.
