By the end of the fi rst quarter,
the Lions were outscored 21-10,
but a slight 26-21 rally in the
second and third quarters put
Cottage Grove within six points
of the Bruins (42-36). It was
only in the fourth quarter where
it seemed Brookings-Harbor
would run away with the game,
going on a 21-11 run.
“They were by far the best
team we have played,” said
Head Coach Kevin Yoss. “We
improved again by taking them
out of what we wanted to do.”
The Lions used a defensive
scheme called a 2-2-1 press,
which is considered to be very
effective in young and non-pro-
fessional leagues and is essen-
tially designed to keep the ball
out of the middle of the court.
And that’s what the Lions
did. Less than half of the Bru-
ins’ points were scored from the
paint (26) allowing the Lions
to outscore them by two in this
area.
The downfall of Yoss’ strat-
egy was Brookings-Harbor’s
ability to sink three-pointers.
The Bruins were forced to take a
total of 21 three-point shots, and
with that many attempts, they
managed to sink six of them (28
percent).
The comeback rally fell short
due to inaccuracy from the fi eld.
While the Lions shot over 80
percent from the free-throw line
(three out of four players shot
100 percent), it was another
game where they shot for less
than 40 percent on fi eld goals.
Senior Melissa Thielman was
the leading scorer with 12 points
on the game. Thielman was four
for four on free throws but shot
36 percent from the fi eld. Taylor
Harsh was two for two on free
throws but sank two of 13 shots
(one of them being a three-
pointer). And in an ironic twist,
there were two players who
didn’t sink any free throws but
were 80 percent from the fi eld.
Keara Murphy and Hannah Ar-
nold both went four for fi ve on
fi eld goals. Arnold missed one
free throw and Murphy was
never sent to the line.
Despite the loss, the Lions
still showed signs of improve-
ment by out-rebounding the
Bruins 36-30 and showing
their scrappy side by having six
steals (Brookings-Harbor only
had one).
Cottage Grove then hosted
Elmira to begin league play,
where they endured a much
tougher loss to the now 18-
ranked Falcons (8-6). Elmira hit
the ground running by scoring
four three-pointers in the fi rst
quarter (their only three-point-
ers made). After being down
28-11 at halftime, it seemed that
the Lions would be unable to
surmount such a defi cit and lost
51-38. Again, this was not a loss
that Cottage Grove would be
demoralized by. They outscored
the Falcons 27-23 in the second
half but just need to be able to

perform at their highest poten-
tial throughout the entirety of a
game.
Field goal accuracy was again
an issue, as the Lions shot under
30 percent this time at 28 per-
cent. Cottage Grove was also
hurt with 22 turnovers (which
Elmira capitalized on for 26
points).
The Lions’ leading scorer
was Harsh with 11 points, all
of which came from behind the
three-point line or at the free-
throw line.
This was a game where the Li-
ons weren’t necessarily beaten
by a better team but simply lost
to their own mistakes. However,
now that they’ve tasted win-
ning and have proven week af-
ter week that their spirits aren’t
dampened, the Lions will keep
searching for wins as they move
further into league play.
“We build more and more
everyday in practice and are
achieving our goals,” said senior
Dana Caro. “We’ve come a long
way.”
And yet there’s still a ways to
go.
