Girls' soccer tops 'em all in 2015
C
ottage Grove High
School girls' varsity
soccer team had a great year
in 2015. The team went 9-1 in
league play, winning the Sky
Em League for the fi rst time
in CGHS history. Follow-
ing the season, the team that
took up nearly 50 percent of
the all-league roster, in addi-
tion to boasting the league's
coach and player of the year
(Vern Stewart and Kiana He-
menway, respectively). These
accolades earned the team its
status as the top local sports
story of 2015.
His crown was met with the
speeding shoulder of a TCU de-
fender, and that was the end of
his career with the Ducks. Back
-up quarterback Jeff Lockie then
fi nished the drive to a fi eld goal.
From then on, it was all down
hill.
It was the story of the Ducks'
season compiled into one game:
the starting QB gets injured
and there was no one there to
replace his production on the
fi eld. Before his injury, Adams
Jr. completed 13 of 19 passes
for 197 yards and a touchdown.
Lockie completed seven of 15
passes for 36 yards. But the
lack of offensive production in
the second half wasn’t entirely
Lockie’s fault. After yet another
injury, the Ducks brought in
backup center Doug Brenner,
who simply couldn’t execute
in many snaps. More often than
not, the ball was snapped right
at Lockie’s feet, who then had
to bend down, giving TCU’s de-
fense a reactionary advantage.
“Just a weird thing, normally
my snaps are perfect,” Brenner
said.
But player execution aside,
one has to wonder what was go-
ing on with the coaching staff.
For instance, offensive co-
ordinator Scott Frost left the
Ducks after the Oregon State
game for a head coaching posi-
tion at Central Florida, so it was
up to new offensive coordinator
and former wide receivers coach
Matt Lubick to call offensive
plays. Whether or not that was
an issue is hard to determine,
but when a player can’t execute
the simplest yet most important
part of every play (the snap), a
substitution would seem to be
in order. And as far as the quar-
terback position is concerned,
the Oregon offense is stacked
with athletes, and Lockie isn’t
among them. Oregon’s offen-
sive scheme is built for the quar-
terback to move quickly and
swiftly from inside the pocket to
out in space, and Lockie didn’t
possess the athletic capability to
do that.
This was seen on a third down
play where the ball was snapped
at his feet (yet again) and he
decided to kneel to pick up the
ball, where he was ruled down,
although he threw a pass to an
open receiver for a potential fi rst
down.
The rest of the game was put
on the shoulders of Royce Free-
man, who ran for 130 yards and
three touchdowns, one in the
fi rst overtime to save the Ducks
from losing right there.
Whatever the reasons, TCU
tied the record for the biggest
comeback in bowl history, tied
with Texas Tech’s win over
Minnesota in the Insight Bowl
in 2006.
It’s sad that the Village Green
ended its festive tailgate season
on this note; one can only imag-
ine the crowd it would have
brought had the idea been intro-
duced a season earlier when the
Ducks took a trip to Arlington
for the National Championship.
