hristmas in Cottage Grove
festivities on Saturday,
Dec. 5, offered holiday activi-
ties all day and all over town
to usher in the Christmas spirit.
Fortunately for all, the expected
windy and wet weather arrived
later that night.
The day began with Breakfast
with Santa at the Harrison Av-
enue Fire Station. The Method-
ist Church hosted an afternoon
holiday concert featuring gradu-
ate students from the University
of Oregon’s School of Music.
All-day holiday bazaars hap-
pened on both ends of South
River Road. The annual Pros-
pectors and Golddiggers Bazaar
at the historic Dr. Snapp House
featured a beautifully decorated
Victorian-era home built in 1886
by one of the town’s fi rst doc-
tors. Down the road at Cottage
Grove High School, the Dorena
School Parent Club organized
its fi rst bazaar with vendors of-
fering a variety of food, hand-
made crafts and unique gifts.
Things really got busy at 5
p.m. after Santa Claus arrived
on a fi re truck to sing Christmas
carols and light up the commu-
nity tree in Trailhead Park. As-
sisted by his giant elf (aka Brad
Cohen), jolly ol’ St. Nick went
on to City Hall to greet children
and hear their Christmas wish-
es, while City Manager Richard
Meyers snapped a photo of them
next to the Christmas tree.

listed downtown businesses to
host a Scavenger Hunt as part
of a holiday Art Walk. A South
Lane Wheels shuttle ran between
the Historic Downtown District
and the Village Green Resort
so people of all ages could en-
joy the resort’s wedding garden
magically decorated in a color-
ful holiday light display.
Over in the northwest neigh-
borhood music played on the
antique Victrola at the Cottage
Grove Museum during the sec-
ond annual Stained Glass and
Candlelight event. The stained
glass windows of the original
Catholic Church were illumi-
nated as historian Joanne Skel-
ton described the backgrounds
of the immigrant families that
paid for them in the late 1800’s.
On the other side of town the
C.S. Lewis classic The Lion, the
Witch and the Wardrobe holi-
day production played to a full
house.
A real crowd favorite was
the return of Cottage Grove
Faith Center’s Block Party in
the parking lot of the Shampoo
Dolls day spa on the corner of
5th and Main Street. The lot was
ringed with 75 lighted Christ-
mas trees that were given away
free to families at the end of the
event.
everal propane heaters kept
people warm as they consumed
550 cups of soup, more than
1000 cookies and 500 hot bever-
ages. The biggest crowd pleaser

of Faith Center’s Block Party
was the caroling hayrides that
transported singers around the
northwest neighborhood to en-
joy colorfully decorated home
and businesses.
A large pickup pulled a cov-
ered trailer decorated with white
twinkle lights and hay bale seat-
ing. Pastor Isaac Hovet and a
pianist on an electronic key-
board led the singing from the
pickup bed. Each of the dozens
of trips made between 5-8 p.m.
was laden with carolers of all
ages and each trip concluded
with “We Wish You a Merry
Christmas” as it returned to the
loading area.
Pastor Hovet said church
members look forward to this
event each year that requires
more than 100 volunteers to or-
ganize. He said approximately
75 people baked cookies, made
homemade soup and donated
rolls that took 29 food and bev-
erage volunteers to serve it. For
church volunteers, their most
poignant moments were seeing
people from a wide cross sec-
tion of belief present and smil-
ing.
“We simply love this town
and want to express that love by
contributing our part to commu-
nity events and initiatives,” Hov-
et said. “The Christmas Block
Party was another resounding
success! It was incredible to see
the looks of joy and merriment
on the faces of old and young
alike.”
