School-by-school reports cont.
Students at Dorena School
kicked off the start of the Ef-
fective Behavior and Instruc-
tional Support program with
a fi eld day at Grove Christian
Camp. Activities for the day
emphasized team building and
an opportunity to practice the
Panther EBIS rules away from
school.
Students at Dorena know that
success is built upon a com-
munity of learners who practice
fi ve EBIS expectations: Be
safe, Be respectful, Be respon-
sible, Be Here, and Be Gritty.
Students are awarded Pride
Panther Bucks for excellent be-
havior. The school also teaches
a “savings” plan where students
bank bucks for future purchases
at the student store. At the end
of the year, students use their
Pride Bucks savings to attend a
spring Field Day at the Grove
camp in May.
Numbers Talk
Teachers at Dorena have
formed a PLC team to practice
strategies that get to deeper
conversations regarding math.
Teachers are working with
Marcia Trujillo to take prac-
tices of Sherry Parrish’s book,
“Numbers Talk,” into the class-
room. After experience the
lessons with students, teachers
are given the opportunity to
discuss their experiences with
each other. Teachers will meet
with Trujillo regularly over the
course of the year.
Harrison
Elementary

ing back and relaxing that day!
Students will continue fundrais-
ing with a bowl-a-thon and a
Bingo and Dinner Night this
winter. Those who would like

Latham
Elementary
Harrison’s three classes of fi fth
graders have just completed
their fi rst fundraiser by selling
candy bars in the community.
For every dollar’s worth they
sold, the students earned $1 of
Bobcat Bucks for an auction.
Students have to budget their
funds to purchase the items
they want most. One of these
awesome students will be pur-
chasing the right to be “Princi-
pal for the Day” and run all of
our Bobcat Blitz assemblies for

Technology is making an
impact
In kindergarten, Linda Pabst
is having her students utilize
SeeSaw, on online portfolio
and a multimedia journal that
empowers students to showcase
what they’re learning at school.
Throughout the school year,
Seesaw builds an organized,
digital portfolio of each
student’s learning, accessible
by teacher, student and parent.
Seesaw also keeps parents in
the loop by giving them a real-
time, personalized glimpse into
their child’ s school day, via
automatic iOS or Android app
notifi cations, text message or
email.
In addition, two Latham teach-
ers are utilizing DonorsChoose
to receive more IPads for
students to access other apps to
foster learning in their class-
rooms. One of these teach-
ers has used her IPad to have
students do a story retell for the
weekly story while learning to
use the I-Movie app to record
their retell.
London School

met with second-grade teacher
Deb Henderson and EA Sylvia
Wege on Nov. 5 to share what
they learned and to plan how to
effectively implement the sup-
port program.
Enhanced Core Reading
Instruction
ECRI is an evidenced-based
reading program developed
at the University of Oregon
designed to augment South
Lane’s reading adoption,
“Journeys.” Thanks to Jackie
Lester’s efforts and Superin-
tendent Parent’s support, Tier 1
(core) and Tier 2 materials and
training in the program have
been provided for K-2 teachers.
The training on Oct. 22 saw
K/1 teacher Mina Christianson,
London’s new Little Library
has been on site since Septem-
ber, but the school offi cially
christened the wonderful di-
minutive repository of literature
Oct. 27. Local Ford Institute
project lead Don Strahan was
on hand to talk with the third
graders who decorated our little
building, and Garrett Bridgens
was out to be sure plenty of
pictures were taken. Kids were
excited about their contribution
and immediately dug into the
collection when all was said
and done!
Lincoln Middle
School
Students at Lincoln Middle
School recently had the oppor-
tunity to see how 3-D printers
work.
Casey Kerns’ math class was
taught fi rst-hand by Dustin
Kerns, a former student at
Oregon Institute of Technology,
an employee of a 3-D printer
company, and, best of all,
Casey’s brother. Dustin gave
a presentation on the array of
possibilities of 3-D printing.
Students were amazed by the
objects that could be created
using 3D printers. As a parting
gift, Dustin gave each student
a cube, which was made using
the 3-D printer. Most 3D print-
ers are used for engineering,
but they are becoming more
widely used in the medical fi eld
as well. At Lincoln Middle
School, the technology is being
used in its Lego Robotics class,
where a printer called “The
Cube” is being used to make
rocket parts that then are tested
to see which ones fl y faster.
