Most people don’t realize that
their pet has a special story, so
they begin their tale with, “She
is an ordinary pet.” Then they
share a wonderful story fi lled
with love, educational informa-
tion and giggles.
“We originally searched
rescue dogs for a furry fam-
ily member,” began Pasquale’s
wife Debbie. “We even attended
a pet fair to peruse adoptable
dogs. None spoke to us, but we
did see a lady with a striking
black and white dog. She said,
‘It’s an English Pointer. They
are the nicest dogs with no ma-
jor health issues and known for
long healthy lives.’
We found a darling eight-
week-old English Pointer puppy
in Boston. We live on the West
Coast, and her breeder would
not fl y the puppy in cargo as
sometimes animals escape and
get lost, get injured or even die
in transit. But we were in luck!
The breeder has friends living
close to us so she combined de-
livering our ‘baby’ with a visit
with her loved ones.
We wanted our English Point-
er to have an English name.
Prince William’s pretty sister-in-
law’s name is Pippa, and also a
nickname for Piper, and it fi t our
pup. Piper means ‘fl ute player’.
Our Piper is not musical, but she
makes our hearts sing.
Piper is a happy-sweet dog
with a gentle soul. She is typi-
cal of her show line of Point-
ers, who are calmer and more
relaxed than their hunting coun-
terparts.
English Pointers come in
many colors: orange with white
coats and orange markings,
black noses and black eye liner
around their eyes. Then there
are lemon Pointers with pink
noses and pink skin around their
eyes. The breed also comes in
either black and white or liver
and white. Very few Pointers are
one solid color, which I’ve only
seen in rare photographs. Their

breed is not very common, so
strangers often stop us, just like
Mary Ellen “Angel Scribe” did,
inquiring about her breed.”
“Piper does not like walking
in the rain,” said Pasquale. “She
has two rain coats: a yellow one
for spring and a warm winter
one in navy and green plaid.
However, she loves the snow.
She goes wild, jumping in it like
a child. When I toss a snowball
she runs after it, but she can’t
ever fi nd it!
Piper has taken the famous
Pointer stance ever since she
was eight weeks old when she
saw her fi rst bird. She runs like
the wind, almost Greyhound-
like, and she has an amazing
nose for scent! Like a Beagle
she practically drags her nose
on the ground during walks. In
the beginning she had no clue,
interest or desire to chase sticks
or balls, but I eventually taught
her through patience. I would
toss a stick and she would run
in ever increasing circles around
me, often in the wrong direction,
while I encouraged her ‘go fi nd

it’. Her circling would widen to
20 or 30 feet until she zeroed in
on the exact stick, in amongst
many others, on the beach. It
was amazing to watch. Then she
took it one step further.
During our hikes, I would toss
a stick. Then on our return trip
she would go to that exact same
spot and encourage me to toss
the stick again. But it did not
stop there! Her memory is so
good that she remembered the
location of each toss location
from previous walks and would
go to the spot coaching me to
toss another stick.
Piper is aware of other dogs’
intentions. She must read either
their minds, facial expressions
or tail language. If a dog looks
dicey, she stays away from
them, but if it is friendly, she
greets them with enthusiasm.
But as sweet as she is, we
occasionally question her intel-
ligence. She enjoys our morn-
ing and afternoon walks up the
mountain trail. But the time we
came across a bear, she trot-
ted over to it as if it was a BIG
friendly dog to play with. The
bear must have recognized her
intentions and was not aggres-
sive. But, in a panic, I called her
back and to our relief the bear
ran off.
Piper does the funniest thing
with her three-foot bed pillow
and we refuse to buy one any
bigger! The reason is that she
drags her bed from room to
room, and a smaller one saves
her from knocking over more
things. She wants to be with
us, so she drags her bed under
the table at dinner and then out
to the living room to watch TV
with us. She dragged it into the
den during our interview with
Mary Ellen. Her other fun habit
is announcing our mail’s deliv-
ery. Or could it be her welcom-
ing the postal worker who ‘gifts’
her a cookie? Piper keeps us
healthy by taking us for walks,
is full of love, good company
and completes our family.”
TIPS
“A tired dog is a well behaved
dog,” said Debbie, “so Piper is
exercised every day, whatever
the weather. She likes to chew,
so she has a good selection of
toys, which means she doesn’t
chew on things she shouldn’t.”
