Lumber outlook not too cheerful
T
he general outlook for the
northwest lumber indus-
try is not as cheerful as it might
be. It becomes more apparent
every day that the big bulge in
buying that was experienced
during the late summer months
was out of proportion to the cur-
rent consumption, even granting
that much more lumber is being
used that there was a year ago
at this time. That is particularly
true of the domestic cargo mar-
kets. Nearly ever mill had a lot
of business unfi lled when the
strike was called because it will
be remembered there were very
few plants that had their crews
taken from the jobs on the same
day and most of them were out
before the tentative date which
had been announced for May 6.
The Filling of these old order,
together with a heavy volume
of new business, placed en route
at very big footage of lumber a
few weeks after the mills go to
going. Remembering the tieup
which resulted from the long-
shoremen's strike, everyone was
inclined to take at face value
their threat to go out again the
latter part of September, con-
sequently nearly all domestic
cargo buyers anticipated their
requirements.

youth interested in being a part of local govern-
ment by joining the Cottage Grove Youth Adviso-
ry Council. YAC members attend and participate
in City Council meetings, discuss local issues and
visit the State Legislature. Annually the YAC also
holds a YAC Academy where the YAC members
get hands on experience with a sewer line camera,
backhoe, police felony traffi c stop and a zombie
apocalypse. All middle-school and high school-
aged youth in the community are eligible to apply,
and forms and information about the YAC are
available on the City’s webpage. Anyone inter-

Scenic Bikeway conference
City Manager Richard Meyers attended the Or-
egon Scenic Bikeway Proponent Conference in La
Grande, Oregon recently as a member of the Or-
egon Scenic Bikeway Committee. The conference
is held to review the Scenic Bikeway program and
to discuss the progress of the Scenic Bikeways
designated throughout the State. The Covered
Bridges Scenic Bikeway in Cottage Grove was
one of the early scenic bikeways designated in the
State program.
At the conference the results of a report conducted
to examine the economic impacts of Scenic Bike-
ways were presented. The report, prepared by
Dean Runyan Associates, listed Cottage Grove’s
Covered Bridges Scenic Bikeway as the fourth
most ridden of the 12 Scenic Bikeways.
Cyclists who rode the Oregon Scenic Bikeways
made expenditures of approximately $12.4 mil-
lion in 2014. The 8,400 rides on the Covered
Bridges Scenic Bikeway translated into about
$1,390,000 spent by the riders.
Focused traffi c enforcement
The Cottage Grove Police Department utilized
some additional staffi ng on Wednesday and
Thursday of last week to conduct focused traffi c
enforcement in a few problem areas. In response
to a complaint, offi cers issued nine citations on
Wednesday for parking in a fi re lane near Lincoln
Middle School. On Thursday, offi cers conducted
15 traffi c stops, which resulted in warnings or
citations for 11 failing to yield to a pedestrian in
a crosswalk, one for cell phone use and three for
failure to obey a traffi c control device. The City
says additional efforts are being planned and will
be conducted at different locations in the com-
munity.
