“On one free kick, we
didn’t move with the in-
dividual player that was
receiving the ball, and she
was pretty wide open,”
Stewart said. The other
goal came from a miscom-
munication between goalie
and defender, who collided
into each other, allowing
Elmira to score.
“Elmira is always a
tough place to play,” Stew-
art noted. He also men-
tioned some incompetence
in the offi ciating game, as
Melissa McCasline went
down with a head injury
and the referees didn’t stop
the game.
“We just have to be able
to play through it and try
to play our game,” Stewart
added. “We just try to go
into every game the same
and not let this get into our
heads.”
The Lions recently
fell out of the top 10 in
the rankings due to their
strength of schedule, but
these wins have reported-
ly boosted Cottage Grove
back into the top 10, rank-
ing at #7.
Stewart also reports that
previously injured Me-
lissa Thielman will be
back from her concerning
knee injury this week, as
the MRI showed nothing
seriously damaged in her
knee.
The Lions will host
Sutherlin on Thursday,
Oct. 8 at 7 p.m.

Boys' soccer wins big after loss
After a tough loss to Sisters, the Lions regrouped to beat Elmira 3-0
BY SAM WRIGHT
The Cottage Grove Sentinel
The boys’ soccer team trav-
eled to Sisters to take on the
Outlaws, but as it was with many
other sports this week, Sisters
seemed to be the program to
beat. The only varsity team with
a win over Sisters this week was
the girls’ soccer team. The boys’
soccer squad fell to Sisters 3-0
on Tuesday, Sept. 29.
“Sisters was really good,”
Head Coach Brian Fish said.
“We need to get better at com-
peting in tough games.
Fish explained that the Li-
ons have recently been starting
off very strong, energetic and
competitive, an issue that they
struggled with earlier in the sea-
DAVID
son. The loss brought the Lions
down to 5-3, but Thursday they
hosted a tough Elmira squad and
bounced back from their shutout
loss to a shutout win over the
Falcons.
The Lions ran over the Fal-
cons 3-0 on Thursday, Oct. 1,
improving their record to 6-3.
Those who scored were
sophomore Kyle Conley, whose
speed and aggression has given
him many opportunities to shoot
on goal-with two goals, and se-
nior Bryce Allen, who Fish not-
ed of making an excellent assist
for the fi nal goal of the game.
He also reiterated the progress
of the team this season, and the
win gave him the notion that at
least the team is moving in the
right direction.

“I think we’re going to have a
much better second half of the
season,” he said. “We’re start-
ing off on a forward foot each
game.” What the Lions need to
do now, according to Fish, is
push harder in the second half
and get the opposing team “on
their back foot.”
This week, the Lions coach-
es have moved a lot of players
around to different positions,
and that’s where their focus of
work will be during practice.
“We’ll have to work on what
the roles are for each player af-
ter moving them around,” Fish
stated. This will lead to a lot of
preparation as the Lions travel
to Sutherlin to face the Bulldogs
on Thursday, Oct. 8.
