Lion girls soccer dominates Pirates
The girl's soccer team came into the game expecting a tough chal-
lenge against a veteran team but ran away with the game, 9-2

The girls' Lion’s soccer team
put on a show of pure dominance
on Tuesday, Sept. 8 against
Marshfi eld. The Lions put up
a staggering nine goals against
Marshfi eld’s two. Head Coach
Vern Stewart said that his team
was prepared for a fairly diffi -
cult challenge, but that proved
not to be the case.
“We thought we were going
to have a bit more trouble with
them because there are a lot of
seniors on that team,” Stewart
said. But the Lions came out
and took care of business.
It’s usually when one high
school team dominates another
that one dominant player plays
at a level above everyone else.
The women’s soccer team,
however, shattered that theory,
as fi ve different players scored
goals that day, four of which
scored two a piece.
The top scorers for the Li-
ons with two a piece were Josie
Mootz, Melissa McCasline, Kia
Hemenway and Jasmin Lopez,
all seniors except for Hemen-
way. The score board was also
contributed to by senior Chelsea
Bottorf with one goal.
Coach Stewart attributes his
player success to a variety of
teamwork-based skills.
“Everyone was passing and
moving well,” Stewart said.
“We were also talking and com-
municating very well, and of
course our offensive fi nishing
was great.”
The Lions now look to North
Bend and Sutherlin this week.
North Bend has a reputation of
being a very strong soccer pro-
gram (for both boys and girls)
and Stewart looks to bring his
team out with the same confi -
dence and prowess as they did
in their Marshfi eld contest.

The Lion’s volleyball team
traveled to North Bend on
Thursday, Sept. 10 to play
against the Bulldogs in its third
match of the season. The Lions
emerged victorious for the fi rst
time this season, beating North
Bend 3-1.
New Head Coach Jason Cor-
win attributed their success to
the serving game and the ability
to pass very well.
“Our passing allowed us to
get a lot of kills,” Corwin said.
Most notably, freshman Cas-
sidy Herbert fi nished the match

Within the tournament games,
Corwin switched up formations

The Lions look to hosting

On Saturday, however, things
went a bit different for the Li-

hosted a volleyball tournament
on Sept. 12, where the Lions
played a total of six matches but
only played the best out of three
sets instead of the regular fi ve,
and the third set going only to

Unfortunately, the Lions end-
ed up going 1-5 that day. Coach
Corwin says the team's main
struggle is learning the new sys-
