Paws-on Healing
T
o be purr-fectly honest, I
have never experienced
a dog-goose-bump greeting be-
fore meeting Rascal! As he and
his pet parent, Wanda, walked
passed me, Rascal looked over
and directly into my eyes, then
his entire face burst into an
amazing smile that replicated a
human’s joyful expression.
I asked his ‘mother’ for ‘his
story’ and it was immediately
clear that this unique designer-
bred-street-dog combination,
Dachshund/Yorkie/Chihuahua,
was designed by God...purely to
gift love.
“When my daughter, Corina,
was eight years-old, we were
horrifi ed to learn that she had a
tumor on her optic nerve,” said
Wanda. “The treatments left her
feeling so sick and weak that she
barely attended any grade three
classes.
Corina has always loved ani-
mals, and her original plan was
to become a veterinarian. How-
ever, she changed her mind after
receiving treatments. She real-
ized that she could ‘not handle
seeing animals die’.
Our friend who has two dogs
and a cat admired Corina’s ma-
ture and responsible attitude.
They often chatted about their
shared love of animals.
When we learned about Cori-
na’s health issues, and that she
has to undergo a 1-½ years of
chemotherapy, our friend en-
couraged us to adopt a dog for
Corina as a loving companion,
confi dant and a comfort to ease
her struggles.
Our friend explained that ‘we
can only hold one thought at a
time and that focusing on a dog
would help Corina forget pain,
sickness and treatments. Also,
a pet was something loving to
come to after a hospital stay.
It was ‘someone’ that would
quietly understand her without
judgment.’
She was right, but she also
put her heart behind her words
and organized a fund-raising
event among her friends for a
puppy’s adoption and the need-
ed pet supplies to raise one!
Rascal was born early in July
2003, and our entire family fell
in love with the ‘cutest dog on
earth’. We adopted him at the
end of August.
On the days that Corina was
able to ‘escape’ the hospital and
come home for a few days, Ras-
cal joined us as we entered the
hospital to bring her home. The
other children patients loved see-
ing him walking down the corri-
dors! He made their day! Ras-

cal is exceptionally friendly and
sweet to everyone. Wherever we
go, daily, we receive comments
on how beautiful and cute he is
— just like Mary Ellen noted.
He looks more puppy-like than
a 12-year old senior dog.
Having Rascal during our
family’s diffi cult time was
a blessing! He is exception-
ably gentle, and the medical
staff allowed him to sit on my
daughter’s lap during chemo
treatments. Because of Rascal,
Corina had company on the days
she did not feel well. We could
hear her in her bedroom teach-
ing ‘dog school’. Rascal learned
tricks like high fi ves, roll-overs,
and shake a paw.
When anyone in our family
arrives home, to show us how
happy he is to see us, Rascal
sprints up and down the stairs!
He loves his squeaky toys, mas-
sages, kisses and cuddles and to
be spoiled! His favorite activity
is riding in the car, but he must
sit up and look out the window
to see if we are heading in the
right direction. It is a funny
thing about dogs — they have
no clue where you are going,
but they act like they are direct-
ing you there.
And what has happened to
Corina? She is now 20 years-
old, her tumor shrank in half
and it has remained that way for
the past 10 years. She fi nished
high school, in French immer-
sion, and was accepted into the
University of British Columbia,
but instead she chose to immerse
herself into a political and inter-
national relation degree, in Eng-
land, at the University of York.
And in her ‘spare’ time she and
Rascal Face Time each other.
I am so proud to be Corina’s
mother. She is one of the brav-
est, strongest and most ambi-
tious people that I have ever
met. Besides studying, she has
two jobs, and is always help-
ing others by accepting differ-
ent volunteering activities into
her busy schedule. While away,
she misses Rascal but luckily
she will be heading home soon
to spend some time with us and
her BFF (best furry friend)!”
TIPS
BEWARE
Caution walking pets on a
‘warm’ day!
When the air temperature is a
mere 77’ the asphalt/road pave-
ment/sidewalk measures 125’.
Remember if you can’t walk
barefoot on the pavement, nei-
ther should your pet.
Test the asphalt with the back
