Cheering Champions
Cottage Grove High has a
nationally recognized sport
— cheerleading.
This year's varsity squad
received a bid for the national
competition after giving a star-
studded performance at this
summer's cheerleading camp.
The team is one of the fi rst ever
in Cottage Grove history to
receive such recognition.
The junior varsity and varsity
squads attended the National
Cheerleading Association's
camp at Souther Oregon State
College at the beginning of Au-
gust. The local team competed
against some 12 other varsity
squads from schools in the sur-
rounding area for the national
bid.
"I don't know that we really
expected to win it," said Amber
Davis, a senior and captain
of this year's cheering squad.
"When they announced our
name you could barely hear it
because everyone was scream-
ing. I just remember my friends
face and the look of excitement.
Everyone was jumping up and
down.

Caller at station to fi le credit
Several classes may go beyond
capacity enrollment at Cottage
Grove High School for the
fall term, Principal Donald R.
Brand reported this week.
Brand said he based his esti-
mate on preliminary reports
from the school's counseling
and guidance department.
Early trends in the registration
pattern by the students during
pre-registragion sessions last
spring shows that many are
electing a completely blocked
schedule of six classes, Brand
said.
This, along with a heavy enroll-
ment in the sixth period athletic
class, further restricts schedule
fl exibility, he added.
Brand again issued a reminder
of the Sept. 7 and 8 registration
dates.
In order to take every pos-
sible step to facilitate student
choices, the principal added,
sophomores are being directed
to sign up on Sept. 7 and ju-
niors on Sept. 8 from 7 to 8:30
pm.
A yearbook autographing party
is scheduled at the high school
cafeteria this Friday, Sept 3 at
8 pm.
Students must pay their fee in
full to receive their annuals.

The Community Develop-

Georgia Morrill, who has
worked for the department the
last three years, left to get mar-

Idaho to attend BYU.
The City says Morill was in-
strumental in setting up its tall
grass/noxious vegetation pro-
gram this year and teaching
two new interns who will carry
on next year with the program.
Thank you and congratulations
to her. Glenn Rust was new to

Willamette Watershed Council
to implement Phase 2 of the
City’s Drinking Water Protec-
tion Plan. Toward this end, the
Watershed
Council
has
scheduled four separate classes
tailored for small acreage land-
owners and those new to manag-
ing land. The classes are sched-
uled for four Thursday evenings
during the month of October
of 2015 and will be held at the
Dorena School. Classes begin
at 6 p.n. and end at 9 p.m. A
copy of the Living on the Land
class brochure is included with
this issue of the Friday Update.
The Phase 2 implementation of
the drinking water protection
plan focuses on public outreach
and education and is aimed at in-
dividual landowners. The intent
is to educate private landown-
ers about the best management
practices available to ensure wa-
tershed health.
The recently completed Phase
1 implementation of the drink-
ing water protection plan dealt
with the development of co-
operative agreements between
stakeholder agencies to improve
watershed health.
Street striping
Last week, all of the streets
that are under the control of

year to re-stripe all of the City
streets that have any type of traf-
fi c control striping. This work
is generally performed in one or
two nights each year between 9
p.m. and 4 a.m.
