WOE HERITAGE FAIR 2015
Cottage Grove Bible Church Awana Grand Prix
C ottage Grove Bible Church
Awana Grand Prix, offers a free
interactive, creative and hands-on
experience to children (ages 5-12)
attending the Western Oregon Ex-
position Heritage Fair.
Since 2007, up to 100 students
Kindergarten through 5th grade
have been invited each year to
make their own derby car to race at
the fair on Sunday afternoon. Giv-
en the materials to design, sand and
paint for their own car, volunteers
will be on hand to assist them.
What the child does:
1. Check in and register for the
race by choosing a number for the
car.
2. Receive a car kit.
3. Design the shape of the car.
Child is given a sheet of paper to
sketch the desired shape, then glues
the paper to the block of wood.
4. Take car to band saw where an
adult volunteer cuts the block of
wood to the desired shape.
5. Sanding station: an adult volun-
teer sands the car for the smaller
children.
Older children are allowed to use
the sanders with adult supervision.
One
sander is for concave surfaces, the
other for convex surfaces.
6. Drill press: a hole is drilled into
the bottom of the car by an adult
volunteer to aid in the painting
process.
7. Workbench: child takes car to
workbench to manually sand out
lines that are left by the sanders. At
this time, the child may round off
the corners of the car and make any
adjustments desired.
8. Paintbooth: after the car is
placed on a stand made with a
wooden dowel, the car is painted
with a brush-on sealer by the child.
It will take about 20 minutes for
the sealer to dry.
9. Workbench for more sanding:
light sandpaper is used by the child
to smooth out any streaks left by
the paintbrush when sealing the
car.
10. Paintbooth: a color is chosen
by the child for the car and is
sprayed on by a volunteer. After
the paint dries, the child may wish
to add stenciled detail or any other
creative design. Numbers are put
on the car.
11. Drill press: an adult helps insert
the wheel pins by use of the drill
press.
Wheels are attached.
12. Weigh station: car is weighed
and adjustments made so that the
car meets the required 5 oz speci-
fi cation. This may require drilling
and placing weights in the wood.
13. Car is given a test run to make
sure that the wheels are running
smoothly.
14. Car goes into the “garage”
cabinet to await the race.
15. During the race: when the
child’s number is called, child goes
to the garage to get the car, takes
the car to the race track where the
car is placed on the proper track.
Child goes to the end of the track
to watch the race and to retrieve the
car. After each race, child returns
car to garage until called to race
again. Child races a total of four
races (one time on each track).
