at OIT. Corwin also led the Owls to
back-to-back postseason appearances
in 2013 and 2014.
According to Athletic Director Dave
Presley, Corwin was a candidate dur-
ing last year’s search process; however,
the timing was not yet right for him to
leave the OIT program.
“It’s not very often that an AD will
come across a candidate who is, frank-
ly, so overqualifi ed as Jason,” said Pre-
sley. “We are very fortunate that the
stars aligned this time around.”
Corwin grew up in the Springfi eld
area and coached at Thurston High
School for fi ve years prior to becom-
ing the head coach at OIT. He said
that the opportunity to be closer to his
home and children was a key factor in
his decision to accept the position. His

daughter, Haley, will be a sophomore
at the University of Oregon, and his
son, Carson, will be a freshman at Wil-
lamette High School.
“I’m really excited to be joining the
South Lane School District,” said Cor-
win, who will be teaching health and
PE at Lincoln Middle School. “The fa-
cilities are outstanding and the people
are great.”
Although Corwin is Cottage Grove’s
third coach in as many years, Presley
said he believes that Corwin will pro-
vide long-term stability for the pro-
gram.
“I’ve had numerous conversations
with Jason over the past couple of
months as far as his passion for build-
ing a successful K-12 volleyball sys-
tem here in Cottage Grove,” he said.
“When college coaches move down to
high school, they aren’t always willing
to put in the work to rebuild a program.

to the start of the season. He said that
through his coaching experiences he
has become familiar with the 4A level
and the Sky-Em League. He also said
that while he anticipates some adjust-
ment period to working with a younger,
less experienced group of athletes, the
fundamental principals are the same
between high school and college.
Presley said that he has already heard
positive feedback from players and par-
ents on Corwin.
“The fi rst thing Jason told the play-
ers when we introduced him was, ‘You
are volleyball players; you can’t think
of yourselves as just a single position.
Everyone is going to learn how to do
everything, because that’s what’s best
for the team.’ That philosophy makes a
lot of sense to me,” Presley said.
Jason did not make this decision light-
ly, and he put a lot of work into getting
back to a place where he wants to be.”
While Corwin’s hiring, which was
fi nalized on July 6, came a mere six
weeks before the start of the fall season,
he feels like the Lions are still on track
for where they need to be. CGHS grad
Elysha served as the interim coach dur-
ing the team's summer league in June.
“It seems like a nice group of kids,
and I really like their energy and hus-
tle,” said Corwin. “It’s also clear that
they want to be good, and they haven’t
necessarily needed a coach to teach
that desire.”
Cottage Grove is expected to return a
pair of all-league performers in seniors
Abby Ladd and Ally Ganchegui. The
Lions will host South Umpqua on Sept.
1 for their fi rst match of the year.
Corwin added that he is not anxious
about taking over a program so close
