Old-growth prevails at BMD beard contest
BY MATT HOLLANDER
The Cottage Grove Sentinel
included his granddad’s spurs, original
Lee Jeans and Ruger Blackhawk pistol.
Ehler’s competition, which was as di-
verse as it was formidable, included Bo-
hemia Billy, who “loves gold and running
around”; “Marshal” Rusty Hawkins and
his deputy, Josh, and Francis Koster, who
sure looked like a gambler but “pled the
Fifth” regarding his profession.
T
he annual Bohemia Mining Days’
beard competition held Saturday
was not a young man’s game, as the judges
rewarded experienced and mature whisker
growers. In the categories for Most Un-
tamed and Most Stately, Patrick Stewart
and Don Solomon were the respective
winners.
Stewart, whose ZZ-Top-esque beard
extend about six to eight inches down
from his chin, claimed to be sporting the
same beard since 1975, although he said it
has been burned down from time to time.
Stewart also said that he wouldn’t recog-
nize himself in the mirror without facial
hair.
Solomon, whose distinguished bristles
could be compared to Willie Nelson’s,
said that his current beard is two years old
but that he has been growing beards on
and off since age 14.
Stewart and Solomon triumphed over a
strong group of contestants that included
James Emery, Ken Hooter and Jesse John-
son.
