Mark Carrell Captures IMCA
Modifi ed Victory At CGS
The IMCA Modifi eds was the
support class to the Western Sprint
Tour. There was some great racing
in the main event and there was a
good car count too, with 20 teams
in the pit area.
Medford’s
Monte
Bischoff
grabbed the early race lead, and
he held the position for some time
before Collen Winebarger made a
move to the front on lap 9. Wine-
barger seemed to be on rails and on
his way to his fi rst victory of the
season, but Mark Carrell had other
plans in mind.
Utilizing the bottom of the race
track, Carrell of Redmond, fi nessed
the throttle and worked his way
underneath Winebarger on lap 18.
Carrell briefl y distanced himself,
but in the closing laps Winebarger
got up on the wheel and started to
reel him back in. But Carrell would
beat Winebarger at the line to score
his fi rst win of 2015 at CGS.
Winebarger was a respectable
second place, followed by Curtis
Towns from Cottage Grove in third.
The rest of the top fi ve was made
up of Cottage Grove’s Kreg Britton
in fourth, while behind him in fi fth
was Jake Mayden from Springfi eld.
Crockett wins Speedweek fi nale at
CGS; Copeland wins Speedweek
Northwest title
BY BEN DEATHERAGE
The fi nal leg of the 2015 Speed-
week Northwest would see the West-
ern Sprint Tour back at Cottage Grove
Speedway on Saturday for Indepen-
dence Day. A jam-packed house of
fans was in attendance for a night of
racing that was stellar from start to
fi nish. A total of 24 entries signed in
representing Oregon, Washington,
California, Idaho and Montana as
well as the nations of Australia and
New Zealand. The fi nale main event
payed $5,000 to the winner.
A great battle for the lead was
waged for the top spot with three lead
changes in the fi rst lap. Kyle Hirst,
from Chico, Calif., paced the fi eld
on the fi rst lap but lost the position
on the following lap to Trey Starks.
Starks, of Puyallup, Wash. only had
brief control of the spot before Hirst
returned to the lead on lap 3.
A couple of cautions kept the fi eld
bunched up tight and disallowed
Hirst from constructing a massive
interval, though he seemed very ca-
pable. Hirst received quite a bit of
pressure after a lap-12 restart. Roger
Crockett chased him down and got
by him on lap 16.
Hirst threatened to pass Crockett,
but unfortunately Hirst would hit the
front stretch wall on lap 23. A few
more restarts gave challengers some
ammunition to overtake Crockett, but
he was just a little bit faster. Crockett
won the feature to earn his fi rst win
of the week, his 19th career Speed-
T RAIN
week victory, and the sixth time he
has won a Speedweek race at CGS.
Steven Tiner from Visalia, Calif.
was second, and Phil Dietz, from
Billings, Mont., managed to earn
an impressive third. The rest of the
top fi ve was made up of Roseville,
Calif.’s Colby Copeland in fourth,
and Justyn Cox of Clarksburg, Ca-
lif., was fi fth.
Starks was fast time of the night,
and Hirst earned the pole starting po-
sition of the feature after winning the
trophy dash. Heat winners were Col-
by Copeland, Central Point’s Garen
Linder and Steven Tiner. Idaho pilot
Randy Pierce would be victorious in
the consolation feature.
Colby Copeland would be de-
clared the 2015 Speedweek North-
west champion after winning the fi rst
three events and posting six top-fi ve
fi nishes in all six starts. It marked
the eleventh time that a Californian
has won Speedweek. He joins Steve
Kent, a four-time winner, and Brent
Kaeding, a two-time winner, as well
as Bud Kaeding, Brad Furr, Kyle
Larson and Kyle Hirst. Hirst was
second in points followed, by Roger
Crockett, Steven Tiner, and Justyn
Cox.
The Western Sprint Tour returns
with two races in August for the Ore-
Cal Challenge. It will start off with a
$5,000-to-win main event at Siskiy-
ou Motor Speedway in Yreka, Calif.
on Friday, August 14, and then they
will cross the border on August 15 to
visit Southern Oregon Speedway.

YOUR BRAIN TO BREAK THE HABIT
Everybody knows that texting, talking on your cell phone or checking a
notifi cation on your screen is dangerous to do while driving. And yet so
many people do it. In fact, the chances are you’ve done it too. During April,
Dis trac ted Dri ving Awa reness Month, the Na tional Safety Council
campaigns to alert all drivers to the dangers of using a phone to text
or talk while driving.
When a cell phone rings, it seems to come with a compulsion to answer
that is very hard indeed to resist. But the Na tional Sa fety Coun cil says that 21
per cent of all crashes in the U.S. in volve people tal king on phones. That
equals more ac cidents per phone -talker than any one of us would like to
be res ponsible for.

The problem of phone-related distracted dri ving can only be solved by choosing
to not do it anymore. So, how to shake that compulsion to answer? They say
starting a new good habit requires a reminder, a routine and a reward. For
driving safely, this translates into a three-step brain trai ning exercise.
Each time you get in your car and sit in the driver’s seat, that’s your
reminder to take out your phone. Your routine is to check your texts
and e-mails one last time before you ac ti vate your “Sorry, I’m driving”
app or turn off the device or place it out of reach. And the re ward is a self-
congratulatory word (“Way to go!”) each time you stop the car to use the
phone or ask a passenger to take your call for you.
If you opt to place your cell phone out of reach, then put it on the back seat.
The glove box isn’t far enough; you may still be tempted to reach for it during
bumper-to-bumper traffi c slowdowns.
Think you can drive if you’re distracted?
Make it a habit
to check for messages before
you start driving.
THINK AGAIN!
